The Hitchgathering is a yearly European festival that celebrates hitchhiking, hitchhikers and connected values such as faith in humanity and wanderlust. This is the 11th year.
Feel free to suggest locations for main/pre/post gatherings around Europe!

Remember to tackle the following questions when you scout for a location:
+
For the first time the Hitchgathering will happen at the area of a Rainbow Gathering, more precisely the national Rainbow of Serbia. The gathering of the tribes meets the gathering of the thumbs!

* Is there space for 100-200 persons?

* Can we acquire drinking water somewhere nearby?

* Are there possibilities to dumpster dive or is food cheap?

* How easy/difficult is it to reach the place?

* How secluded is the place?

* Can we just stay at the place or does it belong to somebody, do we need a permission?

* Can we dig shit pits there?

=== [[Serbian Rainbow Gathering 2018 in Kosjeric]] (Serbia) ===

The Hitchgathering lasts from 1 till 14 August, with 5 till 11 August the central week, when we expect the most of you being here!

Hereby I am adding another suggestion, and now my preferred one over Croatia. Area of Kosjeric in West-SERBIA. The location meets (almost) ALL requirements; first of all, the location is at the same place and during the Serbian national Rainbow Gathering 2018 (18/07 till 21/08). At the place, fields, forests, mountain. Running water from house, stream with area suitable for swimming. Nearby major regional road. I just had contact with the organizer (who happened to be a guy I shared several days with the other year) and he was instantly welcoming us to join. As for dumpster diving my usual answer: I do not know (not my field of expertise). But, from the rainbow camp organizer: "Food is cheap in Serbia and very good quality, all organic from my friends in a village." True, that Serbia is among the cheapest countries in Europe. About 140 km from the motorway Zagreb-Beograd, 130 km from Beograd, or 140 km from motorway Beograd-BG/MKE. For sure some will say that this location is far. Phaecalia pits? Sure, it's a rainbow gathering.

Should you like to arrive earlier or stay longer, добродошли (dobrodošli) - welcome, the Serbian Rainbow Family of Living Light welcomes you at the same place from 18 July till 21 August!

=== [[Free Camp in Vrhovine]] (Croatia) ===
+
(European Hitchgathering and Serbian Rainbow Gathering happen at the same place and time, the place which we will share).

I have another suggestion or option for HG '18. In the middle of Croatia in Vrhovine, 150 km south of Zagreb, there is an area called Free Camp. As the name suggests, anyone can camp here for free. I've just been there and even found the location marked as a "campsite" on a map with facilities for tourists. Location can host easily 200 of us. Located near the road, which at times is a bit annoying (noise). There is no water (there actually is, but the tap is closed), although I found water and electricity in the toilets of the nearby railway station (20/25 minutes on foot). The camp has a few electricity plugs, but also not working (switched off). Important, at the camp there WILL be other travellers (camping cars and such) staying there, that's no problem and even very nice. Dumpster diving will I guess not be great, the village has a shop at 20 minutes walking, but small and not very friendly staff, nearest bigger town is Otocac at 20 km, hitchability medium at best, I've also waited two hours once (but in summer it'be better due to more tourists). I've heard that the place has also hosted bigger number of people. Owner is named Alex apparently, but he's rarely at the site, no way to contact. But permission is already there! Food prices are medium. About shit pits, well, there is ONE real toilet and one real sink, but here again the running water is shut of for the moment (who knows, the owner switches it on during high season?). Digging shitpits could be not too easy in that stone/rocky soil, but some solution could be found? Croatia, even the interior as this place is, could attract quite some of us, popular destination and easy to reach. Can I be there from the beginning? For the moment, I guess so! I'd recommend some tools to cut higher vegetation, grasses, herbs, because most of the area is good to camp on, but quite rough. Bonfire is OK, there are some trees but not too many, so for tarps the area is not good. There is no river, lake or ocean next to the place. Nearest stream would be about 5-6 km east (imagine: 2 meter wide, half meter deep, clear water) or 20 km west (small river, Gacka, probably deep enough to swim, the region promotes it for fishing tourism). But I don't know if swimming is officially allowed. At the camp there is even some kind of (cold) shower, but also here water is switched off. Check photos! And visit this link for reviews from tourists that stayed at this FREE CAMP.

At the location there will be drinkable tap water. Dumpster diving will probably not be so interesting. We can buy at cost price really cheap food (it's Serbia!) from the local farmers and this will be cheap. The Rainbow would help us with that, as they of course are taking care of healthy food anyway.

Travelling to the gathering from far away: consider taking one of the three daily trains from Beograd Centar or from Resnik (last at 19:35 / 19:53) to the station Razana. Resnik is on the new A1 motorway and there actually is a busstop on the A1. From that busstop it's a 2.5 km walk to the station. The old motorway runs just behind Beograd Centar station and there is a petrol station only 0.3 km from that station. The ticket for 120 km is just under 500 RSD (4.25 euro).

Hitchgathering is the name of a series of international hitchhiking gatherings held in Europe and Northern America since 2008.

Hg 2018 serbia.jpeg

Beloved brothers and sisters of the hitchhiking tribe!

The Hitchgathering is a yearly European festival that celebrates hitchhiking, hitchhikers and connected values such as faith in humanity and wanderlust. This is the 11th year.

For the first time the Hitchgathering will happen at the area of a Rainbow Gathering, more precisely the national Rainbow of Serbia. The gathering of the tribes meets the gathering of the thumbs!

The Hitchgathering lasts from 1 till 14 August, with 5 till 11 August the central week, when we expect the most of you being here!

Should you like to arrive earlier or stay longer, добродошли (dobrodošli) - welcome, the Serbian Rainbow Family of Living Light welcomes you at the same place from 18 July till 21 August!

(European Hitchgathering and Serbian Rainbow Gathering happen at the same place and time, the place which we will share).

At the location there will be drinkable tap water. Dumpster diving will probably not be so interesting. We can buy at cost price really cheap food (it's Serbia!) from the local farmers and this will be cheap. The Rainbow would help us with that, as they of course are taking care of healthy food anyway.

In the area there are several streams, we will see how suitable they are for swimming or washing.

Although we are hosted by the Serbian Rainbow gathering, there is no ban on non-vegetarian food and no ban on smoking and drinking a bit of alcohol.

There are fields and wooded land on which we will camp.

The place 2 km from the main road 21 between Valjevo and Kosjeric/Pozega. From Valjevo (north), you need to leave the main road 1 km after the village of Razana. From Kosjeric (south), it's 1km after you cross the train tracks.
