En 2012, el "Hitchgathering" o Encuentro Europeo de Autostopistas tendrá lugar en Bulgaria. Este encuentro anual será organizado por cuarta vez por sus propios participantes. El encuentro pretende impulsar la práctica de autostop en Europa.
"El Hitchgathering une a personas de diferentes paises y les proporciona experiencias vitales nuevas. Muestra una forma alternativa de trabajar que permite proteger los recursos del planeta." comenta Arta, un autostopista letón.
Marco Polo, y otros viajeros del pasado, nunca habrían podido realizar sus épicos viajes sin la ayuda de amables desconocidos. Los viajeros surcan los mares por multitud de razones. Viajar gratuitamente entre dos puntos levantando el pulgar no es la única motivación de los autostopistas. Algunos buscan su crecimiento personal, otros aventuras o un mayor, y más amplia, visión de las culturas locales, a través del diálogo con los conductores que los recogen.
En las últimas décadas, la popularidad del autostop ha disminuido. Las personas han puesto un mayor énfasis en la propiedad privada y se sienten más aisladas de la comunidad en la que viven. Existe un mayor miedo a relacionarse con los desconocidos y por tanto se opta por minimizar los riesgos a tomar, como compartir un viaje con desconocidos.
Pero, ¿esto es realmente así? "Gracias al autostop he logrado aceptar mis errores, ignorar a menudo los de los demás y darme cuenta de que existe mucha más compasión, amistad, amor y humanidad ahi fuera de lo que solemos creer." comenta el autostopista Sudafricano Tam. "Ahora soy más paciente y hablador de lo que esperaba. Me he dado cuenta de que la mayoría de las personas desean ayudar al resto a pesar de lo que vemos en televisión. Simplemente, las personas están asustadas de lo que no conocen." dice la francesa Anaïs.
Cada año, una generación de autostopistas emerge. ¡Y ahora están equipados con alta tecnología! Se pueden planear los viajes con un mayor conocimiento gracias a proyectos como http://hitchwiki.org Hitchwiki.org] y Digihitch.com. El alojamiento se puede encontrar en plataformas online como CouchSurfing, Hospitality Club and BeWelcome. Internet permite la acción organizada entre autostopistas de todo el mundo. Un buen ejemplo de ello es el Encuentro Europeo de Autostopistas que empezó, y todavía es, como una iniciativa de personas para asegurar la permanencia y el desarrollo de la cultura autostopista.
"Es una familia en la que puedes compartir 'la esencia' de viajar." dice Max, que acudirá al Hitchgathering desde Nueva Zelanda.
Los Hitchgatherings anteriores se celebraron en Francia, Ucrania y Portugal. Este año, se desplazará a la preciosa playa de Kara Dere, cerca de Byala, Bulgaria. El evento empezará el 5 de Agosto de 2011 y durará al menos unos días, o lo que los asistentes quieran que dure. Pero para la mayoría de los participantes, la aventura empieza muchos días antes cuando emprenden el viaje. Pequeños encuentros previos se organizarán en las ciudades de paso más importantes, así se puede descansar y conocer a otros de camino a Bulgaria. El programa del evento lo crean los participantes, en el acto.
"¡Hazlo! No te arrepentirás. Es una posibilidad de salir de tu zona de confort, de desafiarte a ti mismo, pero también de ver que todavía hay gente buena en el mundo con ganas de compartir.." dice Ron desde Guatemala. "Es un gran festival donde puedes encontrar a otra gente, compartir historias y conocimiento, ¡y pasarlo muy bien! Pero realmente tiene que apetecerte hacer autostop, habrá momentos duros, en los que tienes que apreciar la aventura que estas viviendo." añade el húngaro Zsolt.
"Afortunadamente la razón por la que no ves a muchos autostopistas es porque ya los han cogido" dice el autostopista finlandés Tomi, que añade: "Nos encantaría que este encuentro contribuyera a la creación de una sociedad más sostenible, abierta y con más confianza." Max añade: "¡El autostopista esá ahi para darte la oportunidad de hacer algo bueno hoy!"

In 2011, the European hitchhikers' gathering will take place in Bulgaria. This annual "Hitchgathering" is organized now, for the fourth time, by its participants. The gathering aims to promote hitchhiking in Europe.
"The Hitchgathering brings together people from different countries and gives them life changing experiences. It portrays an alternative way of travelling that saves our planet's resourses." a Latvian hitchhiker, Arta, describes.
Marco Polo, and other travelers of the past, would have never made their epic journeys without the help of friendly strangers. It might appear very simple: raise your thumb to get from A to B for free, but the motivations for hitchhiking vary. Some seek personal growth, others yearn for adventure and others still, appreciate the profound cultural experiences to be had while enjoying their discussions with the drivers that stop for them.
The Hitchgathering started as, and still is, a grass-roots initiative to ensure that hitchhiking culture prevails and develops. Previous gatherings took place in France, Ukraine and Portugal. This year The Hitchgathering is going to be organized on the beautiful Kara Dere beach near Byala, Bulgaria. The event starts on 5 August 2011. But for most participants, the adventure starts many days earlier as they set off for their journey.
Smaller scale gatherings will be organized for them in all major stopover cities, so they can rest and meet the others on their way to Bulgaria. The program of the event is made by the participants, on the spot. Anyone can hold a workshop, facilitate team games or whatever they think might contribute to the success of the event.
"Go for it! You won't regret it. It's a way to get out of your comfort zone, to challenge yourself, but also to witness that there still are nice people on this planet that are willing to share." Ron from Guatemala advices the first-timers.
Max from New Zealand reminds the drivers: "The hitchhiker is there to give you the opportunity to do your good deed for the day!"

Here in Magdeburg the summer hitchhiking season started just in time while the Magdeburg (Pre-)Meeting took place. Hopefully the sun shines on your face as well!
The day before, on thursday, the poll for the location voting was closed and the clear winner is Kara Dere, a huge remote beach at Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The beach borders with a marvelous forest, where it's cool all day long and in the night it's not windy and sandy and which offers shadow as well. Water supply is covered by a natural spring with drinking water. And there will be 72 virgins for every virtuous hitchhiker. (And obviously also a number of very sexist male pigs!)
In Magdeburg our group consisted of Julien, Elsy, Benjamin, Patryk and Jona - less people than expected, but the advantage was that discussions quickly lead to results. We're almost missing the endless discussions of last year :D .
We talked about the issues and topics that had been put down as an agenda and tried to evaluate the feedback from last year, but also discussed different random topics.
You'll have access to the detailled minutes. But, of all the things we talked about, these are the most important points:
- make the website easier to use and understand (especially for new visitors)
- have volunteers to check if things in need to be done are actually being done
- We didn't hatch a detailed program, but we have quite a list of suggestions on how to make the gathering more eventful. To be fulfilled spontaneously as open space at the Gathering
- Plans for promotion and social media
- having an early (maybe partially organisational) pre-meeting end of June or beginning of July in Berlin, way before the actual gathering.
If you have any respect for those that got their ass on the road (for 2 days for some), and spend a whole sunny week-end hunched down on laptops, you'd better read the minutes. Most of it is unimportant chitchat, so we bolded out the relevant stuff. Scroll directly to them. Comment inline.

So, that's a LOT of work, and we have good hope that ALL of it can be accomplished over the months before the gathering, thanks to a new organizational trick. Another thing that needs to be done right now: Some of the lines in the minutes have a "TODO" tag. All those lines need to be copy-pasted to the main orga page at the relevant place. Please do that and, for each item that you copypaste, delete the "TODO" tag.
