Hitchhiking out

You can go just on any road towards the main motorway with a sign, saying for example M74 and you might get a lift easily. Glaswegians seem to be very friendly people - but like all Brits fear of hitchhikers seems common.

Direction Edinburgh

Although the 900 bus runs all the way to Edinburgh, they do stop at the Harthill Service Station on the M8 - you can hitch from there in both directions.

Alternatively, from the city center is not too hard to find a traffic light stopping cars just before they get on the M8. Showing a sign to cars stopped by the red light should work.

    • Beware : Within Glasgow to reach to any point for hitch hiking you could spend upto 2.4 Pounds atleast or more if you are switching between trains and buses. Therefore check out megabus uk which provides bus service 900 at 5.6 pounds between Glasgow and Edinburgh and sometimes even at prices lower than this. You need to book the bus on line and the same price ticket is not available at the Buchanan bus station. Any other recommendation of a petrol station is equally expensive and not worth it. The highway M8 does run through the city of Glasgow and if one follows the way out of the Buchanan Bus Station , and then left on red light, past the university there one can see the road converging into the highway and could have been a good spot for hitch hiking but needs to be tried and tested.

Direction Stirling

Get a train to Stepps. Walk out of the station over the bridge and turn right (north west) along the A80, continue to the roundabout with the big grassy "pyramids" where the M80 joins the A80. Carefully cross the roundabout and stand on the A80 Stirling exit, a little way forward from the lay-by by the golf cub where cars (but not trucks) can pull in. It's not perfect, cars don't have much time to see you and stop, but it usually works for me.

If you are going further than Stirling, don't write Stirling on your sign. Hitching north from Stirling to Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen etc. is very difficult. Edit from Lowa: If you're going to Perth, Dundee or Aberdeen, don't hitchhike from Stepps, I waited 3h in 3 different spots between Stepps and Stirling before getting real lift, I mean more than 5 miles. I've been hitchhiking for 7 years, I'm a girl, and that's the worst spot ever! You should hitchhike directly from Glasgow, it should work way better. One of my friend had the same story as me in Stepps a few weeks before

Direction Loch Lomond, West Scotland

Walk down the Great Western Road for about a mile, heading west from the motorway. About 10 minutes after passing the Glasgow Botanical Gardens, there's a BP petrol station on your left hand side. A lot of traffic from here will be heading out of the city and up the west of Scotland. Don't get here too late, though, because a lot of the traffic is constituted by tourists. You can also use the petrol station as a lay-by and stand at the junction with traffic lights about 30 meters down the road.

Or you can get a train from Glasgow Queen Street to Balloch (about 4 quid; it's easy to get there for free if you show willingness to pay, but only have a quid or two). Come out of the station and turn right up the A811 Lomond Road. You'll come to a roundabout that joins with the A82 - the main road heading north from here. Take a right at the roundabout and there's a lay-by a little way up on the the left hand side.

Direction South (England, Liverpool, London)

Get the bus to Uddingston from the main bus station, and step off on Main Rd. junction with Fallside Rd. (next to a church). Continue on Fallside Rd. and cross the motorway with a bridge. Arrive at the Uddingston services area, quite busy with traffic heading South. It's best to hold a sign with the motorway number (AKA M74, M6) or to approach drivers and ask. Though being a very good option to get sure, fast and long distance lifts, be aware that the bus is expensive! 4.50£, and no way to blackride it (neither to pay the cheaper fare till and get off later, the driver will ask you for the difference..)
