Although the 900 bus runs all the way to Edinburgh, they do stop at the Harthill Service Station on the M8 - you can hitch from there in both directions.
Alternatively, from the city center is not too hard to find a traffic light stopping cars just before they getting get on the M8. Showing a sign to cars stopped by the red light should work.
