In France most service stations have fences around them. Usually there are service roads for employees, which are often closed with a gate that you will find to be open. The gate for pedestrians and access to the service roads is often situated close to the actual petrol station, which is good to know since many service stations are pretty big. Leaving a service station to go to the other side using service roads is often possible, keeping in mind the right direction as listed below. There are also quite a few service stations with a direct way to cross, using a pedestrian bridge or less often a bridge restaurant.
This complete overview of crossable Aires de service in France do allow you to go on foot from one side to the other. To help locating the stations on a map, the nearest exit numbers are included.
