Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, just north of Sardegna. It belongs to France.

Hitching

Especially in the summer month you see hitchhikers in Corsica. As there are only 2 train lines and busses are slow and rare, hitching is a common way to get around. Protect yourself from the sun.

Hitching in Corsica is very easy, and even the biggest "cities" are small enough to find your way out of easily. We were three hitching all through Corsica and never waited more than 15 minutes for a ride in April 2010.

The roads in Corsica are especially in the mountainous inner of the island small and bumpy. You will be forced to drive in second or third gear. The average driving speed is (except for the national road on the east coast) 50km/h. So you have to plan a bit more time for your hitchhiking trip (even if you get lifts faster). On the national roads are often traffic jams during the sumemr holidays, especially on the east cost.

The Ferry

Ferry near Porto-Vecchio

The towns with a port where a ferry departs (or arrives) are Ajaccio, Porto-Vecchio, Propriano and Bonifacio for the southern part of the island (connecting especially Sardegna and southern Italy) and Bastia, Calvi and L'Île Rousse for the european mainland.

Hitchhiking the ferry seems to be difficult as it have to be booked in advance. But the employees at the port usually don't look to carefully at the number of passengers in the car (maybe it is possible). From the european mainland there are conenctions from Marseille, Nice, Toulon, Savona, Livorno, La Spezia, Piombino and Genova.

Eat, Drink and Sleep

...is very expensive on Corsica. One ball of icecream will be around 2 Euro. A beer 25cl is 4 Euro. Even in the supermarkets fruits which grow on the island are expensive. Peaches for 4 Euro per kilo.

Fishing is free for all on the coast except natural reserves and not in inland water.

Wildcamping is strictly forbidden in Corsica. Don't get catched if you do it and under no circumstances light a fire. There is a very high risk of being the responsible for a forest fire. There are many official camping sites and you better use them, even if they are expensive 10 to 17 Euro per person per night. It is cheaper if you don't come during the summer holidays.
