Cape Breton is the island that makes up a large part of northern Nova Scotia, Canada. It is most famous for its giant fiddle (which is actually just the size of an orchestral bass) in Sydney. The island is probably more well known by travelers as the place to go to get to Newfoundland. North Sydney is where you have to go to catch the 7.5 hour ferry to Port-aux-Basques. Hitchhiking can be difficult, especially, and regrettably, if you have a First Nations look about you. However most people are extremely hospitable and friendly. The scenery is beautiful, but locals may warn you that coyotes on the island are remarkably aggressive.
