Hitchhiking either East or West from Calgary is fairly straightforward -- take a bus as far as you can, walk until you're in a sparsely populated area, and begin hitchhiking. The city has an urban sprawl problem and grows physically larger every year, so you may have to walk quite a ways. For those heading west, the first place where it is possible to hitchhike unfettered is a traffic light some distance past Olympic Park, which is recognizable from a distance by its ski jumping structure and is serviced by city buses.
