The highway passes Beppu high up in the hills, so it's hard to get to on foot. Luckily it's very easy to get to by public transport! Just take bus 5 on the Noguchibaru/APU line from Beppu Station and get off at APU (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University). From there, it's a short walk along the campus to two Service Areas. The one closest to the campus is for directions southeast, the next one is for drivers going northwest.
Both SAs are pretty big and contain restaurants and toilets.
