From Belo Horizonte towards Brasília and the Federal District, one of the options is to go to the parking lot of Apoio Mineiro Ceasa (mostly known by their last name CEASA) and ask the drivers. In case you're not very comfortable with (your Portuguese) asking drivers directly, another option is to go to a gas station a bit farther from CEASA and lift your thumb there. At this gas station cars usually pass by quite fast, and it personally took me some time to be picked up here once.

<map lat='-19.82' lng='-43.95' zoom='11' view='0' float='right' /> Belo Horizonte ([bɛloɾiˈzõtʃi], lit. "Beautiful Horizon"), or BH ("Beagá") is situated in the south-east of Brazil. It has a population of 5.4 million and is the third-largest metropolitan area of the country.

This is really a good city to hitchhikers, it has directly roads to main cities as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador and Vitória.

Hitchhiking out

South towards Ouro Preto or Rio de Janeiro (BR40)

From Belo Horizonte to Ouro Preto (MG) or Rio de Janeiro you can hitchhike a bit farther from the shopping mall "BH Shopping", after the junction of the two main roads BR 040 and BR 356. It is common to see people hitchhiking there.

HOW TO GET HERE Check Google Maps how to get to the school called Pedro Nava, which is located at the junction of the roads BR 040 and BR 356. Ask to get off the bus at Trevo da Mutuca, which should be the name of that junction. Then you walk to somewhere by the main road where you can start and lift your thumb towards Rio de Janeiro / Ouro Preto. A sign might help, as the cars usually pass quite fast here. You might even see people hitchhiking at this spot on Google Street View.

ON THE WAY If you're heading to the city of Ouro Preto or surroundings and the person who picked you up is going towards Rio de Janeiro, ask them to drop you off at Alphavile, it is a very known condominium at the corner of the road that you'll need to take if you're going to Ouro Preto. Alphavile is also known for a lake named Lago dos Ingleses.

Towards Bahia (BR 381) or Espírito Santo (BR 262)

From Belo Horizonte towards east (Ipatinga, Governador Valadares), Bahia or Vitória (Espírito Santo), an option is to hitchhike at a Police Station in the exit of the city. You might even share the spot with a local hitchhiking policemen (some of them use to hitchhike there).

HOW TO GET THERE Check Google Maps to see how to get to the police station called Polícia Rodoviária Federal de Sabará.

Towards São Paulo (BR 381) or Triângulo Mineiro (BR 262)

From Belo Horizonte towards Triângulo Mineiro (Uberaba, Uberlândia) or São Paulo, one of the options is to come to the exit of the city called Betim, where the main roads BR 262 and BR 381 split. This junction is located close to a neighbourhood called Morada do Trevo in Betim.

HOW TO GET THERE To get to that junction, take a bus from Belo Horizonte with direction to Morada do Trevo (in the exit of Betim) and walk a bit to the junction itself. When you get to the junction, just make sure you stand in the right road going towards your destination.

Towards Distrito Federal or Brasília or Salvador (BR 040)

From Belo Horizonte towards Brasília and the Federal District, one of the options is to go to the parking lot of Apoio Mineiro Ceasa (mostly known by their last name CEASA) and ask the drivers. In case you're not very comfortable with (your Portuguese) asking drivers directly, another option is to go to a gas station a bit farther from CEASA and lift your thumb there. At this gas station cars usually pass by quite fast, and it personally took me some time to be picked up here once. A third option is at a speed tracker 1km after CEASA, you can get there with the same bus you use to get to CEASA

HOW TO GET HERE To go to CEASA you can take the Bus 6220 at the corner of Olegário Maciel and Carijos streets OR at the crossroad between BR-381 and BR-040 (information posted on 09/30/2016 - if this information is old pay atention, the number of the bus may have changed). Other option is to check on Google Maps how to get to CEASA or if you'd rather try the gas station, search for "Posto Petrobras no km 40 da BR-262" and Google Maps should find it.
