Earth > Europe > Western Europe > Netherlands > A1 (Netherlands)

The Dutch motorway A1 (Dutch: Rijksweg) begins in the east of Amsterdam at the junction Watergraafsmeer and continues into the German motorway A30 in the east of the country.

The A1 is also known as the E231, between Amsterdam and Amersfoort (east of the junction with the A28/E232) and as the E30 eastward until and into Germany (which it crosses entirely).

Along the way it passes the cities of Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Deventer, Hengelo, Oldenzaal and Enschede.

If you want to go eastwards, walk along this ramp until you find a delivery road. Walk along this for some meters until you reach the service station Honswijck! (3)   Muiden

(7)   Bussum   (good) at the roundabout with a sign |
(average) in direction of Amersfoort, where there is less space for cars to stop. (8)   Blaricum/Huizen   (very good) in direction Amsterdam. There is lots of space for cars to stop on the on-ramp, which is next to a carpooling place.
(9)   Laren

  service station De Slaag
(12)   Bunschoten
service station Neerduist   (good) to get lifts towards Amsterdam
(13)   Amersfoort-Noord   (good) For hitchhiking towards Amsterdam, there's some space on the hard shoulder, so possible to hitchhike. Cars drive along quite fast, so take care.
  Knooppunt Hoevelaken A 28
Towards East no hard-shoulder, but some green to stand on. Traffic low, should be okay. (14)   Hoevelaken
service station De Middelaar   (very good) It might look small, but it's great for rides into Amsterdam!
  service station Palmpol
No hard shoulder in direction east, but it's ok to stand on the side of the road, cars can stop there. Just be extremely careful. (15)   Barneveld A 30
(good) Enough hard-shoulder on this ramp eastwards for cars to stop, traffic sufficient. (16)   Voorthuizen
Tolnegen South   (good) for lifts towards Apeldoorn     service station Tolnegen North   (good) for lifts towards Amersfoort or Utrecht
(17)   Stroe
(18)   Kootwijk
  service station Lucasgat   (average)
  service station De Hucht   (average)
(19)   Hoenderloo
(bad) (north/eastbound) Try to avoid it. (20)   Apeldoorn-Zuid
Huge shoulders, ample place for drivers to stop............. If it only didn't get very little traffic because due to it's location this ramp only serves an industrial estate, a village and one or two housing estates. The majority of cars coming from Apeldoorn will take 21 when driving east or 19 when driving west.
(good) (south/westbound) Towards Arnhem or Barneveld this ramp is doable.
  Knooppunt Beekbergen A 50
(21)   Voorst
service station De Paal   (very good) to get lifts further towards Germany   service station Vundelaar   (very good) to get lifts further towards Amersfoort and Utrecht, also reasonable to get a ride towards Arnhem
(22)   Twello
  (good) (23)   Deventer   (good)
(24)   Deventer-Oost
(25)   Bathmen
(average) Quite ok, not that much traffic though. (26)   Lochem
service station Bolder   (very good) Has a McDonalds, so plenty of cars stopping here. Underground passage connects Bolder and Struik for pedestrians.     service station Struik   (very good)
(average) Enough space along the hard shoulder to hitchhike, but not that much traffic here. Doable. (27)   Markelo   (average) Enough space along the hard shoulder to hitchhike, but not that much traffic here. Doable.
(average) In direction Hengelo this ramp is quite ok, nevertheless no hard shoulder (only up when you're nearly on the motorway), but very few traffic so standing along the road is possible. (28)   Rijssen
  Knooppunt Azelo A 35
(senseless) No connection towards the A1 towards Germany from here, only to the A35 direction Enschede (29)   Borne-West   (good) Small ramp between two junctions, nevertheless good hard shoulder and enough space for cars to stop. Also more traffic than one would expect.
  Knooppunt Buren A 35
(good) Nice hard shoulder and more than enough traffic. All you need from here is a short ride to Het Lonnekermeer. Sometimes getting a ride might take longer because people expect you want a long ride being so close to the border with Germany. (30)   Hengelo   (good) Just next to traffic lights. Wide hard shoulder.
(average) Hitching towards Germany isn't that good, most cars only go further to Oldenzaal, but take your chance if you get a lift to Oldenzaal-Zuid! Note that Het Lonnekermeer can be reached on foot from here. (31)   Hengelo-Noord   (good) Quite good spot for hitchhiking westwards, traffic lights will slow down cars for you.
service station Het Lonnekermeer   (very good) To the east Last petrol station before Germany and for the next 73km! Best chance for you to get cars towards Germany or even Poland (trucks!).   service station Veelsveld   (very good)
(32)   Oldenzaal
(very good) The ramp for you if you come from Enschede! Easy to get cars towards Germany, average waiting time 7 minutes!
Ramp in Oldenzaal-Zuid, on the last meters of the A1
(33)   Oldenzaal-Zuid   (very good) In direction west also a busy ramp for traffic towards the whole country.
(bad) Don't try it here, better walk down to Bentheimerwald services, slightly over a kilometre down the road. Place is well frequented by cops, keep that in mind when you wish to take a shortcut along the motorway. More in the section De Lutte (34)   De Lutte
Bentheimerwald   (average) The old customs, now converted to service station. right on the border. border crossing * connection to the German A 30   De Poppe   (average) The old customs, now converted to service station. right on the border.
