A1 (Netherlands)

The Dutch highway A1 (Dutch: Rijksweg) begins in the east of Amsterdam at the junction Watergraafsmeer and continues into the German highway A30 in the east of the country.

The A1 is also known as the E231, between Amsterdam and Amersfoort (east of the junction with the A28/E232) and as the E30 westward until and into Germany (which it crosses entirely).

Along the way it passes the cities of Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Deventer, Hengelo, Oldenzaal and Enschede.

  • (6)   Naarden-Vesting
  • (7)   Bussum   (average) -   (bad)
    • Towards Amsterdam, this ramp is not really useful. No hard shoulder, fast cars and nearly no space to stop for you. You could walk towards the roundabout and try it there, also the service station 100m further might be an option.
  • (8)   Blaricum/Huizen   (very good) in direction Amsterdam/ There is lots of space for cars to stop on the on-ramp, which is next to a carpooling place,   (average) in direction of Amersfoort where there is less space for cars to stop.

    • Enough space along the hard shoulder to hitchhike, but not that much traffic here. Doable.
  • (28)   Rijssen   (average)
    • In direction Hengelo this ramp is quite ok, nevertheless no hard shoulder (only up when you're nearly on the highway), but very few traffic so standing along the road is possible.
  •   Knooppunt Azelo
    • Chance to get on the highway A35 towards Almelo.
  • (29)   Borne-West   (good)

  •   Knooppunt Buren
  • (30)   Hengelo
  • (31)   Hengelo-Noord   (good)
    • Quite good spot for hitchhiking westwards, traffic lights will slow down cars for you. Hitching towards Germany isn't that good, most cars only go further to Oldenzaal, but take your chance if you get a lift to Oldenzaal-Zuid!
  •    t' Lonnekermeer / Veelsveld   (very good)
    • To the east Last petrol station before Germany and for the next 120km! Best chance for you to get cars towards Germany or even Poland (trucks!).
  • (32)   Oldenzaal
  • (33)   Oldenzaal-Zuid   (good)
    • The ramp for you if you come from Enschede! Easy to get cars towards Germany and into the Netherlands, average waiting time 7 minutes! In the other direction also a busy ramp for traffic towards the whole country. Has been a very good ramp, but recently it seems to be getting worse. Waited 2,5 hours (2 people) on a Tuesday morning without getting a ride towards Germany. When hitchhiking back in direction Hengelo, got a ride within 2 minutes, though.
  • (34)   De Lutte   (bad)/  (senseless)
    • Small ramp with a tiny petrol station before, but no real traffic except some trucks. Don't try it here, better walk down to Bentheimerwald services, slightly over a kilometre down the road. Place is well frequented by cops, keep that in mind when you wish to take a shortcut along the motorway. More in the section De Lutte
  •   Bentheimerwald   (average) The old customs, now converted to service station. right on the border.
  • Border Netherlands - Germany, the highway is going over to the German A30. Take a look there for further information about this way.
