Hundreds of hitchhikers take part in the 2nd European Hitchhiking Week

On August 7th, 2009 (7/8/9), hitchhikers from all over the world will meet up in Odessa, Ukraine, for the 2nd European Hitchhiking Week-"The 789 Project".

The festival demonstrates that even in the age of motorways and low-cost airlines, the hitchhiking community is still very much alive. Every year thousands of people hitchhike all over the world. In many countries, hitchhiking is still an "official"means of transportation. The hitchhiking community seeks to show that sharing your car and swapping stories with a hitchhiker can turn out to be a fantastic human experience in an increasingly individualistic world.

The festival will take place in Odessa, but the adventure will be starting on your doorstep! Each participant is invited to contribute to the event with stories, pictures and videos. Last year (8/8/8), a group of filmmakers directed Paris 888, a feature documentary about 4 hitchhikers travelling to the 888 project.

Journalists are also invited to join the European Hitchhiking Festival. They can team up with experienced hitchhikers and take part in the preparatory meetings taking place all over Europe from the 1st - 6th August. To get the latest news from the road, they can also follow the adventures of a group of hitchhikers and call them to hear their updates and stories from the road.
