Hi guys! I do not have a log here, but I have a full list of my rides online. I just updated it, so check it here: --Fverhart 21:50, 24 October 2007 (CEST)--84.30.146.113 21:49, 24 October 2007 (CEST)
Hey Frank, nice to see you here. Thanks for your contributions so far, I'm sure you have much more useful tips to share ;) --MrTweek 17:38, 12 April 2007 (CEST)
Arnhem
Hoi Frank! Did you remove text from Arnhem by accident or was there are reason to do so? In the former case, don't worry, I merged both versions. In the latter case: it's good to leave a Summary of the edit in case it might cause confusion among other Hitchwiki folks. Guaka 14:04, 13 July 2007 (CEST)

: Yes, because the service area at IJsseloordweg has been reopened in october 2006, like I wrote in the replaced text. The rest of Tom's contribution seemed irrelevant and undesirable; relating the impression that Arnhem has a high share of 60+ drivers with WWII, that there are gangs with saloon cars and adding the caption "hh out of arnhem - one hitch too far is really undesirable and certainly not true. It seamed a way to express frustration, but that's not the right place here ~ then use a boxing ball instead ;). Also, the advice to change an itinerary to Nijmegen when stuck in Arnhem and heading for Germany (eg on the spot that does not exist anymore according to Tom) is not that good. Especially now that the service station under reconstruction on IJsseloordweg is back in service. Besides that it would not be easier or less hard over Nijmegen (or I do not know how to claim that ~ I'm interested to hear why it would be easier over Nijmegen, which isn't the case I claim). Because between the now returned service area and the German border there are still 2 service areas, so only a short ride out of Arnhem makes the world go round, if you have a driver going only to Doetinchem or Zevenaar, you already get by service area Oudbroeken (A12 between exits 28 and 29). And if the service area on IJsseloordweg would be taken out of service, it would still be doable to get a ride there from junction Velperbroek, the roundabout which connects A12, A348 and IJsseloordweg, or at the Esso petrol station in the south of Velp, 100 meter before Velperbroek roundabout! :) Well, it would have been better to discuss the matter and not change, or do this prior to changing the page. I'll copy these comments to the Arnhem page as well! Document about the reconstruction of the service area including a photo: http://www.texaco.nl/pdf/Arnhem%20NL.pdf. Frank, sorry, I see I made a small mistake. You had deleted the whole page by accident, except for the multiple-location discussion, and I reverted it. Wanted to leave you a note about it on your talk-page but got interrupted by something off-line. I now see as well though that you had left a note as well. I now repost your contribution and would propose to delete our little thread at Talk:789 if you're o.k. with that. I also responded to your contribution b.t.w. --Robino 00:35, 26 August 2008 (CEST)
Waiting time per country distribution
Your method of allocating waiting times to countries as a proportion of the distance covered in each country is not "somewhat discussable", it's utterly ridiculous! If I were a follower of this method, I'd have a waiting time in SK for a ride that started in CZ and ended in H, without even stopping in SK... Prino 00:04, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

: Prino. In that chart the distances per country are accurate, where I mean distance of cross border lifts is allocated to the country in which that lift started. Eg, the distance of a ride east from service station Tienbaan neer Heerlen I add to the Netherlands, even though only one kilometer of that ride took place in the Netherlands. Criterium: where did a ride start. Robert, I agree and will early next year re-calculate the waiting times, with allocation to the country in which a lift started, no matter if that ride took place for 1%, 50%, 99%, 100% or whatever% in the country where the lift started. --Fverhart 16:47, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

:You're probably right, but for conviviality it's better to stick to calling each other's ideas "ridiculous" in real life. ;)
:With (a lot) more data it'd be interesting to calculate
:# The waiting time per country
:# The percentage of number plates from other countries (e.g. in SK: 90% SK, 5% CZ, 4% H)
:# The average distance per ride.
:Anyway, given the recent discussions and activity in this field it's time for an article about statistics. guaka 09:54, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

:: Guaka. A lot more data is not really needed. Or anyway, those stats can never be used in general. My stats are pretty worthless if you do not know that I usually hitch at once through Germany or for quite a distance. In Czech Republic I did more local, short distance hitching. In my opinion, collecting data of one million rides is not more worth than data of twenty rides. Just it is somehow interesting to keep track, as it can be useful for later analyzation. One another example, recently I less often hitch the really short distances up to 20 km, I used to hitch more even 5 km, which obviously has it's influence on the lift average length; this one got higher in most of the consecutive years but not or not only due to better developed technique or better knowledge of infra and culture aspects. These days I was creating some charts and figures of my statistics, eg accumulated hitched distance for each consecutive month, starting from 2002. --Fverhart 16:47, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
hi, I'm sorry but I don't have time to add maps now but you can find spots easily: you just have to put coordinates in google map (without any() before and after)
To find a spot coordinates with google map, double clip on the point (center of the window) and put this url: javascript:void(prompt(,gApplication.getMap().getCenter())); a window open with coordinates.
Thanks for checking my adds, and your comments are welcomes, because I'm new and not too good to edit pages...
Hi! Your user page category has been changed to Category:Hitchhikers in the Netherlands because from now on this (along with the old Category:Hitchhikers) will be a standard categorization for hitchhikers on hitchwiki.org (see this discussion here for the reasons of doing so). If for some reason you don't want to be categorized by country, feel free to delete country category on your page leaving only a standard Category:Hitchhikers. We hope you don't mind.

Don't you just hate these? I very much prefer days with very few very long rides... Prino 22:01, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

I do not only hate them, I also like them. Depending on the time there is mostly. Last October I returned from Klodzko in Poland and decided to take the shorter way over regional roads Klodzko - Nowa Ruda - Walbrzych - Jelenia Gora - Zgorzelec, in stead of Klodzko - E8 - Wroclaw - E40 - Zgorzelec. Klodzko to Jelenia Gora took some six hours (good 150 km), JG to Eindhoven took some 9 hours (900 km). Over Wroclaw to Zgorzelec would have taken two or three lifts, would have been some 50 kilometres more, but would have been lots faster, probably between 3 and 4 hours (2/3 national road, 1/3 motorway). However obviously the rides of 1032 and 85 km that I got yesterday and brought me near to home were very pleasant, and forever the ride that let me cross the first 50 k barrier will be also my first ride of over 1 k! I've thought about celebrating the 50 k mark with VHHC in Wilno (oops, Vilnius), perhaps I'll keep this idea for the 100 k. Thumbs up for 2009. --Fverhart 22:19, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
It seems as you could start your trips on average 15 minutes later and therewith reduce your waiting time significantly... ;) Medians and standard deviations would be cool... --Alex 21:42, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

: Hi Frank, i like your statistics. I try to keep a logbook to. I have also the same like your gender studies ;) but only in a excel table on my stand alone pc. maybe we could establish a possibility to join statistics from more hitchhikers, so we get overall statistics. maybe with a web formular or something. does something like this exist?

South, Netherlands, Lueneburg
If you want to go south or towards Lüneburg you should start at Raststätte Stillhorn. It is easy to get there. Just take S3 or S31 to Wilhelmsburg and then a bus to Kirchdorf-Süd. You get off at the last stop. Just follow the road and then you will hear the highway A1. After crossing a little bridge you're already on the parking lot of the service station. Walking distance is about 3 minutes.

If you are going towards the Netherlands, get a ride south to Dammer Berge (just before Osnabrück), where the A1 joins the A30 in the direction of Rheine and Amsterdam.

North or South towards Lübeck, Denmark, Bremen
* There is also a service station you can go to on the A1. To get to it take a S-Bahn train of line S3 or S31 to Wilhelmsburg, then you take the bus 351 (direction Moorwerder, Kinderheim) and get off at Stillhorner weg. The ticket cost 2,70€ (as of feb. 2009). maybe ask the bus driver to tell you where it is as its confusing where to get off.. from what i remember its that you get off beside a big bank of grass just after you cross nearby the motorway you should be able to see a hotel across a field , walk down a small path about 200m and the service station Stilhorn is there.

* For going north to mainland Denmark (direction Flensburg, Kiel, Kolding) take the metro U2 towards Niendorf-Markt. From there get out and ask people for the bus station (Busbahnhof). There take bus #191 until stop Sellhopsweg. Get out there, walk some 200m back to the traffic light. You'll see that the road going left follows the way to the highway. There's no footpath, so you have to walk along the green space next to the road. Might be tricky in winter, easy in summer. Just take care when trucks and cars coming from behind! After some 300m you're at the ramp. There's enough space for you to stand on, and it's easy for cars to recognize you and to stop. Have a look at the picture for this spot. Oh, someone mentioned that this spot might be illegal to stand on, but can you find an Autobahn sign in the picture ? ;-)

East towards Berlin and North East towards Copenhagen, Scandinavia
If you're planing to hitchhike towards Berlin on the A24, there's a big roundabout in the southeast of the city where it's possible to catch a ride directly to Berlin or at least part of the way. From the nearest U-Bahn and S-Bahn stop it's about a 1 km / 13 min. walk. The easiest way is from the S1, S11 and U1 stop Wandsbeker Chaussee. From there you have just to walk straight on Hammer Straße. When you reach the roundabout it is difficult to get a ride standing in the middle of it, as the cars have no opportunity to stop. But on one side, in Sievekingsalle, there is a busstop. This works fine.

This spot is called the Horner Kreisel and is a popular hitchhiking spot for many hitchhikers in Germany.

Some hithchhikers claim that hitching on the roundabout turnof direction Berlin is easier, as here you have much more traffic going your way. The recommended place to stand here is immediately after the roundabout, in the grass before the blue highway sign. Right after the highway sign there's place to stop for the cars. This place is also used by many hitchhikers and it's not uncommon to find a direct right to Berlin in 5 minutes.

You probably want to go to Puttgarden for going into Scandinavia. You can hitch to the ferry at Puttgarden, and get a ride straight to Copenhagen. If you ask the people after they paid the ticket you can cross for free (and save 7 Euros).
Blackriding is possible, albeit risky. Controllers are very frequent and often wear civil clothes, so they cannot be noticed before the doors are closed. And since they do not receive hourly wage but salary depending on how many people they catch, playing the "dumb tourist" will have no effect on them; they want you in their record. The good news is that even if they ask you to pay the fine on the spot (40 euros), you can say you don't have the money and then you have two weeks to pay it. Or, give them a false address and just never pay it.

Niš is a small city in Southern Serbia with 250.000 inhabitants. It is a nice place to stay overnight. It is on the main high-way between Belgrade and Skopje, as well as between Belagrade and Sofia. If you're coming from Belgrade, on your way to Istanbul, it might be easier though to hitch straight to Sofia, and to get a ride towards Sofia at the last toll-station just before Nis, as it is only 190km further.
* Robino got a lift from his host in Nis to the highway around Nis. There is generally not much traffic in the morning, and he is not aware of any good spots or how to get there.

* Hitching on the main road going east from central Nis (which runs just below the castle) seems to work fine. You can just walk down the road for a while until you found a spot you like (perhaps 2/3 km). There's plenty of traffic going to nearby villages, and once you get out of the city you also have a chance of getting longer rides to the border for example.

* Platschi used to hitchhike on the highway near Nis and had no problems getting a ride. At the end of the highway in direction Bulgaria, where the windy mountain-road begins, you can find a well-frequented restaurant where many Turkish truck drivers are stopping. If you get out there, for sure you might find a ride towards Turkey.
Malaysia is a country in South East Asia.

Malaysia is nice for hitching. There is a real expressway running on the north-south axis from the Thai border, via Kuala Lumpur, towards Singapore. Stay on the gas stations with the nice food stalls. It is pretty easy to get a ride there, but in rural areas it shouldn't be a problem, too. On the onramps of the highway after the toll booth you can usually hitchhike as well, and it's possible to regularly stop multiple cars at once. The only problem being that the drivers are often heading lots of different directions then indicated on your sign.

Drivers usually speak English and stop easily. Cars are modern and fast. Local roads seem generally to be in a good condition, and are fast and enjoyable to hitch.

Gasstations
You can usually find tasty cheap meals for about 50 eurocents, and thus don't need to carry a lot of food, if any at all. Cold showers, a real treat in the hot climate, are often available free of charge.

Border Crossing
Malaysians are paranoid about immigrations issues, so if you go from Eastern Malaysia to Brunei you get your passport stamped like crazy.

There is a ferry from Melaka to Dumai, Indonesia (20USD) and police will give you real trouble if you try to leave by a cargo boat (if you can even enter the port. If you make it please inform us here.)
In Georgetown there's a small marina with private yachts. But it's easier to get a free ride with a boat in Langkawi. Most of the boats go to Indonesia.

There are two border crossings to Singapore.

Belgrade (Beograd in Serbian) is the capital of Serbia, home to around 2 million people. The main motorway (Autoput in Serbian) runs pretty much close to the centre of the city from the North West to the South East. Most cars also use this as a normal road so hitching out of Belgrade is quite difficult.

Hitching Out
Heading South East towards Nis, Sofia, Skopje
OPTION 1:
First, from Trg Studentski (Students Square) or Trg Slavia (Slavia Square) get bus number 31 all the way eastbound (ie, not to Trg Studentski) to the end of the route (you should see a lot of market people selling fruit on the right side of the bus). The bus closely follows the route of the motorway. From here, you leave the bus and it's a 10 minute walk straight down hill to the actual motorway.

From here you have 2 choices, you can either go west along the motorway to try to find an entrance ramp, or alternately 2km east is a petrol station, however, you have to either walk along the motorway, or through the grass on the verge, however, this gets very thick at times - it's pretty easy though, just hard work :) And take care, on the way to the petrol station is a police station at the highway. 500m before the petrol station you also find a ramp, but with extremely low traffic. The petrol station is build on a hillside, so don't expect trucks to stop there, Serbian trucks seem to have problems enough to go uphill.

OPTION 2:
This option involves less walking amongst the highway. From the city centre, take tram 7 in the direction south-east until the last stop (takes about 15 minutes, depending on the traffic). From there take bus 308, direction Veliki Mokri Lug (sometimes written as V.M.L.). After about ten minutes you will cross a bridge going over the highway; get out at the next stop 100 meters later. From the bridge you will already see the gasstation where you want to go, which is about 200 meters walking. This gasstation is also located uphill.

A sign saying "10 K.M." might be helpful in catching a local car which can take you to the first toll stop (a hitchhiking stop regularly used by locals) and out of the intense exhaust fumes.

If you're heading for Nis (or beyond) try using a sign (saying Nis). If going beyond Nis remember to leave the car *on the motorway* - not in Nis, unless you're a big fan of walking. About two hundred meters before the highway split Nis and Sofia (Bulgaria) is an abandoned toll area where traffic is going slow and there's place for the cars to stop.

First, from Trg Studentski (Students Square) or Trg Slavia (Slavia Square) get bus number 31 all the way eastbound (ie, not to Trg Studentski) to the end of the route (you should see a lot of market people selling fruit on the right side of the bus). The bus closely follows the route of the motorway. From here, you leave the bus and it's a 10 minute walk straight down hill to the actual motorway.

You have 2 choices, you can either go west along the motorway to try to find an entrance ramp, or alternately 2km east is a petrol station, however, you have to either walk along the motorway, or through the grass on the verge, however, this gets very thick at times - it's pretty easy though, just hard work :) And take care, on the way to the petrol station is a police station at the highway. 500m before the petrol station you also find a ramp, but with extremely low traffic. The petrol station is build on a hillside, so don't expect trucks to stop there, Serbian trucks seem to have problems enough to go uphill.

Some info about serbia and belgrade...

Hitchhiked in spring 2007 through Serbia. I got into Belgrade fairly easy with one ride almost all the way from Zagreb. But going from Belgrade to Nis was a bit harder. I only got short distance rides. It is expensive for drivers to pay the toll on that road from the north of Serbia to the south and there is not a lot of traffic (appr. 10 euros). Hitchhiking seemed to be less common as in Slovenia and Croatia. I got stuck in the middle of nowhere just off the highway and I had to ask drivers to take me just a short distance. From there I just hitched from the shoulder.
--Robino 00:37, 1 April 2008 (CEST)

::I can approve the same experiences from last year July 2007. Many tourists then are on the way to Turkey, with filled up cars. But nevertheless it's possible to do the route in one day. Hitchhiking on the shoulder or directly on the highway isn't that hard, too. Police only asked me to go off the highway and drove away, so no problems with that. Even trucks stopped directly on the highway. platschisite, wikitalk 16:33, 1 April 2008 (CEST)

::Hitching through North Serbia was fairly easy and so friendly, even hitching at night (June 2008), we had fun in Vojvodina getting a ride quite quickly on the country road at night from one village to another. Then another day a straight ride to Beograd. But leaving Beograd to Nis has been a total failure, I tend to say it is quite impossible to leave that city unless someone does manage to put the details on how to get a transport to the Toll and start from there. Has anyone ever found a spot from Belgrade (without a map the one detailled is completely non-understandable Maplefanta 00:16, 30 June 2008 (CEST)

::I've hitched three times through Serbia, and found it relatively hard. In this country I stop less cars, many of the cars that do stop have foreign instead of Serbian drivers, and that even 1 in 5 cars that do stop drive off again (after they find out I'm not speaking Serbo-Croatian?). Maplefanta, I hitched a few times out of Belgrade, I might add some extra info on this later. jurgen 00:59, 10 September 2008 (CEST)
Jurgenhttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Malaysia&diff=24672Malaysia2008-09-09T21:54:14Z
Jurgen:

Malaysia is a country in South East Asia.

Malaysia is nice for hitching. There is a real expressway running on the north-south axis from the Thai border, via Kuala Lumpur, towards Singapore. Stay on the gas stations with the nice food stalls. It is pretty easy to get a ride there, but in rural areas it shouldn't be a problem, too. On the onramps of the highway after the toll booth you can usually hitchhike as well, and it's possible to regularly stop multiple cars at once. The only problem being that the drivers are often heading lots of different directions then indicated on your sign.

Hi. Are you sure they have the correct headings? (the pages themselves are called The West (England) etc.)
Also, I don't know anyone who would call Hertfordshire 'North London'. I created a page on Home Counties - maybe this will serve as a good replacement? ;)
