Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia.

For a lift to Sydney via the Hume Fwy (M31) catch a suburban train to Craigieburn (which is also the last stop on the line of the same name) Walk north down Hothlyn Drive and Walters Street about 10mins, until you get to a nice set of traffic lights with an onramp to the Hume Hwy. Here the cars must slow down for the lights and there is a lane for traffic to pull over.

Similarly just walk east along a road that has an on-ramp onto the freeway, the walk should take a maximum of 15 minutes. Its pretty doable to get to Sydney within the same day as long as you leave Melbourne early enough in the morning. Follow the signs to Seymour (Road 55) and don't get confused with the different numbers on the signs, Seymour should be always right. Alternately, you can catch a 40 minute train from Melbourne Central Station or Southern Cross Station towards Seymour to Wallan. Wallan is just outside Melbourne and from the train station it's a 10 minute walk straight onto the Hume Highway.

For the direction of Traralgon/Bairnsdale (East) on the Princes Highway, take a train to the end of the Pakenham line to Pakenham, then exit the station (theres only one platform) and go straight along the street ahead (should be Henry st). Henry st turns left follow it then turn right at the first right, should be king st. Follow that to the Princes Highway.

Cross the highway and follow it to the right for like 100m more or less and there should be a dirt area where cars can pull over.

This spot has worked for me, but after Bairnsdale it would be harder to get picked up, if you want to go to Sydney, I would recommend the Hume Highway rather than the coast road.

For a ride to Adelaide (west) go to one of the central Train Stations and get a ticket to Ballarat. It is about $10AU (in 2010). The ticket will let you get on what ever train you need to travel to the Southern Cross Station. From there the train takes you about 120km out of town. Once in Ballarat your train ticket will also get you on the buses for the day. Cross the road from the station and take the bus 3 Creswick. Ask the driver to drop you at the Freeway on-ramp to Adelaide. This will save you a 5km walk to the freeway. Walk 200m down onto the freeway then hitch. I made it to Adelaide from here in 10 hours.

To get to the Great Ocean Road take a train to Geelong. Go right out of the station and onto the main highway. Bear left and walk a little to find somewhere a car can safely stop. I walked about 2km down the road to find a really good spot (just before the bridge), which paid off as a car stopped in about 20 seconds. From anywhere else between Torquay and Apollo bay, rides are extremely easy to pick up.

Happy traveling.

Heading North:

Catch a bus that goes down Northbourne Ave to the intersection of Federal Hwy (route 23) and try to catch a ride going down Federal Hwy, which connects back on to the Hume Hwy (route 31) straight to Sydney.

Heading South:

Catch a bus that goes down Northbourne Ave to the intersection of Barton Hwy (route 25) and try to catch a ride going down Barton Hwy, which connects back on to the Hume Hwy straight to Melbourne. Alternately, you can get onto the Monaro Hwy (route 23) south of Canberra city, but this route will probably be more local traffic and less likely to find a ride straight through to Melbourne.
Annfoohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Sydney&diff=57722Sydney2011-12-04T09:51:17Z
Annfoo:

South towards Melbourne
There are two options.

* The Princes Highway is more scenic and mostly not a freeway, but it's 200 km longer. Take a train on the illawarra line to ¨Heathcote¨. Cross the railway bridge and walk to the highway. There is a large petrol station on your left, a caltex I think. This is the last petrol station for quite a way so lots of cars heading south stop here. If you get tired of waiting at the petrol station then walk up the highway for 5 minutes heading south, passed the caravan park there is a good spot with a stopping lane, and the cars are only just coming out of 50km speed limit here. Louisa and Liam caught a train to Dapto on the Woolongong line (about $5 concession). Its about a 2 hour train ride and you end up an easy 200m walk from the highway. There's a shopping centre ("Dapto Mall") near the train station that's on the highway, if you walk about 600m south from here you'll find a bus stop with a long line of site for drivers to see you, and room for them to pull over. Louisa and Liam waited here for 15 minutes until they got a ride to Nowra.

* Take the Hume Highway if you're in a hurry (which you shouldn't be). It takes 10 hours to get to Melbourne if you are lucky enough to get a truck going all the way. It's less easy to get out than on the Princes Highway. Joy caught the train to Casula and hitched from the service station 10 min walk away (waited 10 mins). Check out multimap.com.au to see where to go, or just ask someone.

* Alternatively, catch a train to the end of the Campbelltown line to Macarthur Station, walk north to Narellan road and try to find a car there. If you want to increase traffic, follow Narellan Road to the intersection of Hume Hwy. Note: don't try to cut through the university from the train station directly to the intersection of Hume and Narellan - unless you are happy to climb a fence.

North towards Byron Bay
* Catch a Bus to Hornsby ( 2,50$ - Student Fare ), head towards the Pacific Highway the traffics slows in the area in the morning.
Update: 6 March 2010 by Roux: I would not suggest Pacific Highway. Freeway 1 is faster, got a ride in 10 minutes. Pacific Highway is the old highway and doesn't have much traffic.

* Catch a train to Newcastle and another to Hexham ($11.5 one-way for both). Cross the foot bridge and stand near the bus stop. The traffic is fast moving but there is room for people to pull off. Peacehead got a ride from a truckie all the way to Byron from here. Blink0 (CET) got offered several rides from here, and finally accepted going with a German backpacker all the way to Byron Bay on a 2 day roadtrip!

* Catch a train to Warhoonga station (Northshore line) walk out of the station to your right, past the shops and servo, to the highway follow it down to where it passes over the highway, you can climb off the road you are on and down to the highway or try to walk down the onramp to the road. There is a space where cars/trucks can stop right where you get to, be careful though!

Hitching out of anywhere on the East coast of Australia is pretty easy, and Brisbane is no different. Head out onto one of the highways/motorways/freeways. The Pacific Highway goes south to the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Sydney, etc., and the Bruce Highway goes North to the Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns etc.

Hitchhiking out
The best spots are going to be on on-ramps. If going south the best spot is just off Stanley St in Woolloongabba. For North, head out towards the airport (through the Fortitude Valley) and follow signs to the airport. The on-ramp onto the motorway in Hamilton is a good spot, too.

* Alternatively for going south (Pacific Motorway), catch a train south to Robina station (perhaps its the end of the Robina line?). Exit the station (i think there's only one exit, or at least go to the road that is by the station), follow it to the left, you will arrive at a round-a-bout, which is Robina town centre drive. Turn right here and follow it all the way, you will know it is the right way when you pass a golf course. You will arrive at a round-a-bout, follow the road to the right and try to get to the motorway. The motorway usually has no room for cars to pull over, but under the bridge here and between the exit and entrance to the motorway here there is ample room for cars to stop. I would reccommend to hitch closer to where the exit from the motorway is - even though you'll keep on thinking cars are stopping for you, cars will be able to see you better and you are maximising drivers room and opportunity to stop.

---> The above Robina spot is undergoing roadwork therefore the room for cars to stop has been sealed. Alternately, walk North towards a petrol station to ask for a lift (I think it's Shell).
This spot has worked for me!

___> I went to this petrol station and it was very hard to find a lift because Robina is a small town and all the traffic is local. I found a local who dropped me on the highway, where it was hard to get a lift because the traffic was moving too fast, I was limited to trucks who had time to stop because they had the height to see me from further away. Ultimately, I don't think Robina is a good place while the road at the on-ramp is still sealed for construction - try Tweed Heads?
