Sevilla is a city in the south of Spain and the capital of the province of Andalusia.

Safety
Watch out at service stations in and around Sevilla area for muggers as Sevilla has a history of thefts of truck drivers and other people who stop by. Never leave your stuff alone.

Hitching out
West towards Huelva or Portugal
Option 1
5/10/2019 Alex hitched a ride to Huelva from the roundabout near Carrefour/Decathlon in less than a minute. There is convenient gravel shoulder that allows cars to stop. (37.3901426, -6.0338260)
The spot is well connected to the bus lines M-141/M-142/M-142B from the bus station Plaza de Armas (€1.40 / 6 minutes)

Option 2
The entrance to the motorway is exactly beside the bus station Plaza de Armas. Walk towards the motorway and stop after the bridge. On the right side of the street there is a huge crosswalk. The way to Huelva is to the left and the crosswalk is to the right. One hitchhiker had a waiting time of 40 minutes. Thumbing from the intersection Camas, which is the first one after the motorway junction, seems to be a bad option. A hitchhiker who did try, ended up waiting for four hours.

5/10/2019 Alex tried thumbing at red light of the large circle intersection after crossing the bridge. Although a local informed her that hitching from this spot is common, she had no luck in over an hour, and it was difficult/dangerous for cars to stop here. (37.3897699, -6.0127505)

Option 3
Go to Plaza de Armas and take bus M-161 in direction "Tomares". The bus will drive for a couple of minutes on the A-49 direction Huelva (1,40 Euro). Get out at the first bus-stop after the motorway. Walk back to the motorway, walk along the first roundabout and cross the bridge of the motorway. You'll see an IKEA on the left and a bigger roundabout in front of you. Leave the roundabout behind and you'll the a green petrol station.
Have a look at the Google Map: from the bus stop to the petrol station
Ask for a ride to the next petrol station on the motorway which is 20km far.
Wukk hitched a ride after 10 minutes to the next petrol station. From there you get a lot of traffic directly to Portugal.--Wukk 17:56, 28 February 2012 (CET)
Kossabossa hitched a ride after 30 minutes to a large petrol station near Chucena, 35km away from Sevilla. According to the driver, it's a bigger one than the previous and makes it easier to catch the next ride map. I found a ride to Faro, Portugal in 10 minutes there. --Kossabossa, 1 October 2017

Option 4
Go to Santa Justa train station and take Cercanias C-5 (Virgen del Rocio - Benacazon), in direction "Benacazon". There is a train each hour for 3,30€. Buy the ticket from Santa Justa to Benacazon. Try to get a ride at the very train station, just ask to reach the town ("¿Me puede llevar a l pueblo?" in spanish) or "Las nieves" petrol station ("Me puede llevar a la gasolinera de las nieves"). If you are unlucky, just walk across the road to the village (the one with a bike lane at the right side, and there ask for the motorway or "Andalusí Park" hotel ("Por donde se va a la autovia" / "Por donde se va al hotel Andalusí Park"). Leave the hotel at your right, walk across the bridge over the motorway and you will see the petrol station. From there you can get a long ride, since the station is far away enough from Sevilla. It has a lot of activity, specialy in summer time. But if everything goes bad, just ask for a ride to the next petrol station in Chucena, a big one with restaurant, lot of services, and many cars and trucks for you to try. My experience: It takes me two minutes to find a car outside the Cercanias station. They took me directly to the petrol station and there, in 5-10 minutes, I found a car to Bollullos Par del Condado, my destination.

North towards Extremadura (Merida, Badajoz, etc.) & Castilla y León
Go to the Estacion de Autobuses Plaza de Armas (main station) and take the line bus 41 (confirmed) towards Camas and Santiponce. The ticket costs 1'55€ (c. 2016). Ask the bus driver for la "ultimata parada" (last stop) in Santiponce, from which it's a short (15 min.) walk to El Camino de Santiago (yay!) and also an on-ramp for the Highway 803 to Mérida. (Tip: Nihilobstat got super lucky because during the oranges season a man sets a stand right there to sell oranges, and some extra cars stop there because they know about it :-) )

Warning!: The annoying thing about this route is that you're mostly going to be village hopping - cars tend to be going from small village to small village - and you'll probably wind up waiting at some pretty random on-ramps where there's not a lot of traffic. Still, it's totally doable. 2016 trip took ~6 hours from Sevilla to Mérida.
If you're stuck, it's useful to remember that there is a big roundabout near El Garrobo in the middle where it's easier to find a ride.
This trip was the only time when I lost faith in hitchhiking. The road was almost empty and none of the cars passing stopped, I walked for 2-3 hours until I got to the roundabout El Garrobo. Lola, February 2019.

LINK:

2nd option. (Honestly probably not worth it)
Follow the directions above. Then follow the Camino santiago trail through the fields after 40minutes you should see petrol station on your left. Pass underneath the highway and you should be there. Takes about an hour to walk. This petrol station serves both the highway and the route nacional and plenty of cars stop here going in all directions.

North towards Madrid
Take a bus to the airport of Sevilla. Get off at the airport stop and walk straight on towards the motorway. At the junction you will see a petrol station in your front. It's only a five minute walk, it's safe and you will find a ride for sure!

* Note: One anonymous hitchhiker stayed there for a whole night and day and no one ever stopped. It's a dead end. The hitchhiker would definitely not recommend it. But then again it is Spain and as far as (s)he found out it is definitely completely about how lucky you are or not.

This directions are very, very bad and misleading, so I proposed them to be removed. On the twelve of April of 2012 I tried it. After the airport the only station I saw was going east. So this is what I did... As I walked on the same direction as the bus that left me, I saw that station ahead and was told it was going east. I walked on the highway on the Sevilla direction. I don´t recommend walking in highways. Then I got on some long dirt road walk for about one hour or so. Sorry I don´t remember all the details on how to get there but it´s quite easy I think. Then when I finally say the sign saying Huelva-Merida I walked there. I waited about one hour and a half and got a ride that left me in a town called Camas near the highway to Merida. I walked to the entrance. I´m sorry these directions suck but it´s the best I can do since I am not from there. Next time I´ll try to take a bus to Camas and walk from there.

South towards Cadiz
Take the bus to Betis Football Stadium (which is in the south of Sevilla, Betis street is in the center). Ask for the direction of the autopista. At the end of the Avenida de la Raza is a roundabout. Underpass the motorway to the second roundabout and try to get a ride. You can go via the motorway or the parallel road, which also works, since a lot of people want to avoid the motorway toll. But it's slow of course. A sign might be useful.

Another option, that works better on my opinion is the bus stop in the end of Avenida de Jerez before it became a motorway. There are plenty of space for cars, bus do not disturb you, because they are very rarely and usually this bus stop is empty. This street is more busy that the Avenida de la Raza, but cars goes not so fast, because before the bus stop is the traffic light. A sign will be very useful because after 200 metres road split into two direction. Better to wait direct car to Jerez or Cadiz or if you go further get out on the petrol station before Jerez (check the map).

Another hitch-hiker tried both spots and agrees that the second option is better. In the first spot (after the second roundabout) there is an on ramp where it is possible to hitch, but there's a clear no pedestrians sign, so police would most likely tell you to leave and the traffic there is pretty poor as well (08.2017).

East towards Granada and Malaga
Option 1: Take the bus no.29 from "El Prado" bus station (close to the Plaza de Espana) and get off after about 20minutes when you see CEPSA petrol station just few meters from the bus stop. From there try to get a ride to any petrol station further out of the city and on the A92 highway and there to get a longer ride, to Malaga, Granada or any other destination on East.
NB: we tried this place with a girlfriend and had bad meetings with strange men , then a very nice couple picked us up to tell us this was the quarter : torreblanca , one of the most dangerous in sevilla...so pay attention in this place, people.

Marco: We spent 3 hours at this gas station and met only local people buying "Buthan Gas". After this time a young guy brought us back to the gas station we've seen before from the bus ("Elbag" or sth. like this). There where not many cars at the gas station, but with a sign we got a lift along the street. Take care to get a lift further than the next village.

Option 2: Catch the number 29 bus from the city centre to a bus stop appropriately called "Aux. Autovia Málaga (Drago)" in eastern Seville. Cross the footbridge and walk along the A92 highway for about 10 minutes until you reach a BP petrol station. There isn't always a footpath on the highway but you can walk one black away from it and rejoin very easily.

This BP petrol station is a popular refueling stop for people driving through Seville and is also strategically located near the on-ramp to the highway. You shouldn't have to wait too long.

Towards Cordoba
From the center, walk to Avenida de Kansas City (After RENFE San Justo train station) and on towards the Autovia del Sur. There will be a Carrefour on your right along with a petrol station. If you continue on there will be another petrol station - CEPSA - that you can stand in front of or wait at to ask for rides. The area is surrounded by trees which make it possible to camp and water is available if you ask inside the petrol station. Bring cardboard though as you might have to stay the night.

There is also a bus stop on the road between those two petrol stations, with some place for cars to stop after.
Madrid is the capital of Spain. It is geographically located in the centre of the Iberian peninsular, and thus has road connections to all directions in Spain and also Portugal.
Hitching out
South toward Córdoba, Granada, Algeciras 5
There is a bus stop just outside the metro station San Cristobal (on line 3, or the "yellow" line) that is good to hitch from (make sure you're on the correct side of the road). There is nowhere else to pull over for several kilometers back toward the city. This same road (Av. de Andalucia) leads South, toward the entrance to the Autovía del Sur highway, which goes to Córdoba and Algeciras. Not far from the entrance to the autovía (maybe only about 5 or 10 km down) is another petrol station. So, you don´t even need to find a ride that is going very far from this point, because you can simply ask to be dropped at the next petrol station on the Autovía del Sur.
This option worked really well for me. Got to one of the gas stations and got a ride to Andalucia in 5 minutes! Lola, January 2019.

As hitching a ride standing on the road is quite difficult in Spain (especially in a big city like Madrid), it is probably better to follow these instructions:

Alternative1:
There is a small service station with a McDonalds in Pinto. Takethe Cercania C3 from Sol (or other stations from Central Madrid), should cost nearly 3 euros. Then get off at Pinto. Walk eastwards through several streets towards the motorway, via avenida isabel la catolica. Have a look at hitchwikimaps or googlemaps how to get there. It's around 1.5 km. Once in the service station, ask people. Apparently, there are a lot of people going through towards morocco, so you might get a long distance hitch towards south (although sometimes cars are packed). It might be better than alternative 2 which has little/local traffic

Alternative 2
Christian1337's recommendation:
Another option is taking the "cercanias" or "renfe" C-3, which leaves from Sol, to the Station "Valdemoro". The ticket should cost 3,30 € and it takes 30 minutes to get to "Valdemoro". Get off the train and walk down "Paseo de la Estacion", take a slight left onto "Calle República Argentina" (the road right next to the highway) take a right to follow "Calle República Argentina". After 100 meter turn left onto "Avenida de Andalucia" and follow it until you get to the petrol station. In total it is a 30 minute walk (going uphill, exhausting in summer). The petrol station is right next to the highway. There is also a big truck stop. The station has mostly local people (as it has a car wash) and is usually quite empty, but you will find somebody (going to Ocana) who will take you to the next service station.

In any case, try to get to the Sesana service station, it's on the motorway 4, between Valdemoro and Ocana. Although it is small, it has a restaurant, and unlike other service stations in the South of Madrid, you will find long distance rides there (Granada, Cordoba) with some patience.

East toward Valencia, Murcia 901
Take the metro 9 in the direction Arganda del Rey (it costs 1 euro for regular zone ticket + 1 euro for extra zone, you have to buy 2 different tickets) and get off at the stop Rivas Vaciamadrid.

Go out of the station, on the right pass under the bridge to the roundabout. You'll see some steps that lead to a bridge over the motorway, on the left there is a petrol station + an motorway onramp. Combine using a sign with asking people and be patient.

Northeast towards Zaragoza, Barcelona 90
Hitchhiking between Madrid and Barcelona is fairly easy, but there are multiple options

* Go by train or bus to Guadalajara, 50 km away. The journey will cost about 4 euro (4.50 euro from Atocha). Then take a bus to Taracena, a small village several kilometres from Guadalajara (This will cost 1 euro). Just tell the driver that you need to go to the station, a lot of people ask him for that.("Tengo que ir a la estacion de servicio en la autovia") From there you can get to a petrol station next to a bar restaurant, already on the motorway towards Zaragoza and Barcelona. If people are not going too far, try to get a lift to the next petrol station, 15 km away, much bigger and with many trucks.

Steffi and Manu tried this option. It takes a long time to get to the spot (it took us 2h from Atocha), and from the renfe train station in Guadalajara there is (as far as we know) no direct bus to Taracena, you first have to take a bus from the renfe station to the bus station. there the buses may leave only every hour. the petrol station is rather small and, when we were there in winter, there were mostly local cars.

* The San Fernando hitch point is a cheaper way. Take the train from Atocha in the direction Alcala de Henares or Guadalajara until the station San Fernando near Madrid. The train ticket will cost 1.45 euro. Behind the San Fernando train station there is an entrance to the motorway where you can easily hitchhike.

* Kacheksja hitched from La Garena. Take the Renfe train number C7 direction Alcala de Hernares or C2 direction Guadalajara from Atoche. Get out on the station named La Garena. When you get out of the station, go right to av. Juan Carlos 1. It later continues in av. de Europa. Then follow the signs saying "A2 Zaragoza". First you see a Shell petrol station (possibility 1 - a bad one, the traffic is low, it's in the city and on the wrong side of the road) then the roundabout that goes onto the highway is possibility 2 (better but still the traffic is low and there is no good place for cars to pull over). The best one is the Galp petrol station. You can access it from the industrial area right behind it - it's a very good hitch - hiking spot, he got a ride offered without asking!

North towards Burgos, Basque Country, Bordeaux 5
Option 1
Take the metro to the station Pinar de Chamartín (1 euro). Walk on the street calle Arturo Soria, cross the M-11, follow the street Camino de la Fuente de la Mora, then turn left at the avenida de Manoteras. You can stay directly in front of the train station. NoNastions got a ride there in 20 minutes. There is a traffic light and the cars can stop there, more or less.
This is an upper-class office area full of good-looking young people driving Mini and BMW 120d. There is a Cepsa petrol station on the left 300 meters further, but Grégoire didn't find it very welcoming and preferred to stick his thumb out at the end of the street, where he got a ride to another petrol station further on the A1 30 minutes later.
Once out of Madrid, safest idea is to request lifts to the various service stations, and simply approach people who drive in and politely ask them for a lift. TallNomad found a lift all the way to Bilbao from a service station/truckstop simply by approaching random strangers with a smile and explaining his journey plan. General waiting time is 30 minutes during the busier hours at a good spot. Avoid the smaller roads, except during tourist season, when loads of sat-navs send travellers on weird routes, and lifts can be found easily enough.

Option 2
Another option is to take the metro to 'Hospital Infanta Sofia' on line 1. From this metro station you can walk ten minutes up the road to a Shell petrol station on the side of the E5 heading north. From the metro station follow the road 'Paseo De Europa' for 800m.(Successfully used in September 2018).

Option 3
(Last check July 2018)
Take the bus 191 Madrid (Pza. Castilla) - Buitrago de Lozoya in Plaza Castilla and go to the stop CTRA.A1-CRUCE EL VELLÓN, which stops right on a Repsol petrol station (Estación de Servicio Repsol, CR A-I P.K. 49,00 D, 28729 Venturada, Madrid). It is a small petrol station but with lot of traffic and most cars go either to basque country or france. Last time I waited 20 minutes and I had a ride to Irun. The only inconvinient is that the bus costs 5€.

Northwest towards Galicia
Take metro line 3 to Moncloa. On one of the underground levels of the metro/bus station, take bus number 162 to stop 'Av. Padre Huidobro - Argentona', located on route A6 in the direction of La Coruña. You'll pass a Repsol garage- when you get off the bus, walk back down the road about 1.4km to reach it. There is a pavement followed by a foot-trail, so you don't have to walk on the road. Not a big garage but there's a steady trickle of drivers. Earlyturtle found a lift in 30 minutes in June 2017.

West towards Portugal 90
Take metro line 6 to the station Alto de Extremadura and then go to the petrol station on the street Avenida de Portugal, which is the A5 highway. From there search for a lift at least to another petrol station at 48 km down the A5. Apparently if you walk 5 minutes down the road on the left there is a place that serves free food at 12.00pm.

Alternatively, it seems like one could easily get to the service station "Polvoranca" on the R5.

You would have simply take the "10" metro line to puerto del sur, about 30 minutes riding away from the city centre, and then walk a kilometre or so down Av. Leganés, splitting off to the petrol station as you can see here
from this petrol station, it seems like most of the traffic would be going towards Toledo or Portugal.
Fye checked this spot on Monday, 14.08.2017 two times (around 1 pm and 7 pm) and both times the petrol station was very dead, with very few cars passing it. In fact the whole R5 highway at this place is surprisingly dead for a highway. Not sure if that was about time or is it always like that. Better go directly to petrol stations on A5 though.

There is a good petrol station with Burger King on A5 close to Móstoles. To get there, take a metro to Hospital de Móstoles and walk about 1 km (check the map). There is a petrol station on each side of the highway and a bridge connecting them.

Public transport
Madrid has a very extensive well-connected metro system that can help you get in and out of the city; a single metro journey is 2 Euros, and a ride on the cercanías should be between 2.50 and 4 euros. If the guard is not watching, or if the metro station has two entrances, you can usually jump the turnstiles. Once inside, there are few controls. The cercanías, however, have barriers at the entry AND the exit.

Zaragoza is the capital of the state Aragon, in Spain.

Hitchhiking out
East towards Barcelona, France
A general problem is that lots of people take the National Road next to the motorway because it's free. There it is not that good to hitchhike because there aren't as many petrol stations.

The bus #28 is not the best choice to hitchhike out of Zaragoza. You will get to a kind of good looking point with a petrol station and a red-light before the motorway but you will soon figure out that not even 10% of the cars go on the motorway. Most of them just cross it over on the bridge. Now Fabzgy would rather try his luck with the bus 29 and get of as close to the cross of the city motorway.

Wladi tried the bus28-thing: It really doesn't work! Better to follow the "Ronda Hispanidad Z-30" (Wladi hasn't tried yet - finally he took the alsa.es-bus to Barcelona) to get to the motorway access.

By the way - the second petrol station is bigger but not really on the motorway. So try the first one after Zaragoza if your driver doesn't go far.

Barcelona --- Succesful hitchhike after 3 hours ---

I first went to this round-about like intersection and stayed exactly after the first road sign saying BARCELONA - on the first lane. I stayed there for 3 hours and the closest success was some guy shouting out the window 'Where do you want to go' in Spanish because I didn't have the sign posted and I was just signing by hand. This was completely useless because he just went with 80km/h so I didn't have time to respond.
In my opinion Spanish people do not hitchhike and tend to make fun of people who do.
Anyway, the roundabout intersection is
here.
Then I got pissed off and considering the previous reviews about bus 28/29 I said I'm going to try something 'new' so I just walked randomly to this place

You can get on Av Alcalde Francisco Caballero with bus 44 until the intersection with Ronda Hispanidad and then walk all the way up on the bridge towards the Nord Este Autovia junction.
That whole area is an industrial site so there are a lot of trucks passing by and the chances are bigger with them than with normal cars. In the same time the problem with that junction is that trucks don't have place to stop but the guy who picked me up just stopped in the middle of the road so apparently that is not a big deal for some of them at least.
As I found out from the driver, the best hours are around 10:00 and 18:00-19:00 because there are generally 2 shifts of transporting merchandise between Zaragoza and Barcelona.
I got picked up at 18:30.

He also told me almost all merchandise trucks are leaving from Mercazaragoza which is a little bit to the north from the junction I've hitchhiked from, and that it's way better to go there and ask the drivers.
Mercazaragoza is here

He said any city in Spain should have a Merca<name-of-the-city> where the trucks get loaded with stuff and that from now on I should go directly there.
Hope this information is useful to anyone in the future

I think the best option is the petrol station/service area in "La Puebla de Alfinden" -going by public transport https://www.soydezaragoza.es/bus-de-zaragoza-la-puebla-de-alfinden-alfajarin/ - Alternatively you could try to hitch with a sign saying something like: bring me to the highway, I'm a traveller from...etc. Had really good experience with such big, amusing signs in Japan and the US.

Southwest towards Madrid
To hitch Southwest towards Madrid you are best to catch a bus towards the airport (501, 1,85€ as of 2018), which stops at a large shopping plaza. You can get out here and try to hitch from an on ramp to the A2, but you are better to walk along the side of the A2 for about 2kms until you find a large 24hr Gasolina-Restaurant. From here it is easy to approach drivers for a lift to Madrid.
I tried this and couldn't find a direct lift to Madrid, however I haven't found a better option. Be careful not to stop in any gas station on the way to Madrid, most of them are empty and you can easily get stuck. Ask your drivers for the good ones that are right on the motorway, not outside. Lola, January 2019.

North-West towards Logroño, Pamplona, Leon
Catch either bus 27 or 52 to Centro Augusta. From here follow the N-232 for 5 minutes till you reach a petrol station. There is a lot of local traffic, but the service workers are very nice they arranged me a good lift to Logroño.

After Centro de Agusta, there are three petrol stations. Most drivers will be staying within Zaragoza or going to one of the outlying pueblos such as Utebo. Therefore, go to the third gasoline station. From there, try to get a ride to the truck station which is about 10 km away. If there are no vehicles, or it is night, you can walk there. The name of the truck station is La Joyosa and can be accessed by walking - illegaly - on the AP-68 towards Logroño. I arrived at night and found a ride the next morning.

- You can enter a good petrol station right on the highway from the city centre with a walk of about 20-30 minutes, I easily found cars there: If you go from the bus stop Avda. Navarra 54 C.C. Delicias in front of the Centro Cívico Delicias you can take the bus 603 to CASETAS, leave the bus at the stop Logroño 14 (which is the second stop in the vilage) and take the next steet to the right (Calle del Palacio) and head staight on for 200m, also go straight (2nd exit) at the roundabout and head on for another 500m. There ou will see some stairs to go over the trails at the railway station. Just continue till you reach the other side of the rails. Here you will encounter a small street on your left between two factories. On this road you see a roundabout after 100m that leads you over a bridge above the highway from where you can already see the petrol station. on the left side. Go on the other side of the bridge and continue on a small path parallel to the highway for about 800m and in the end you will see a walking enrance to the petrol station.

Bristol is biggest city in the south west England, UK.

Hitchhiking out
To London, Birmingham & Cardiff
There are two spots to leave Bristol from the center, the M32 Silvey Services opposite Staples. This is a Shell petrol station, which is an excellent hitching spot. Signing from just next to the exit, cars are able to pull in or pick you up as they leave the petrol station and whilst not all lanes can pick you up, you are highly visible and all cars will pass you. Normally less than 15 minute wait, though Jonathan has waited up to 90 minutes. Many cars will not be going to London but don't be stressed.
The Shell station is a good spot but the staff working there was very rude when I was there, I got kicked out and had to wait outside the station (but it was still a good spot). They might still say that you have to leave but legally it's outside their property so you can just stay there. Lola, December 2018.
__TOC__
About one kilometer further after the roundabout there is a long hard shoulder next with enough space for cars to stop. Colinc has waited for 2 hours at Silvey on occasion and Wherever gave up after waiting for three hours on a rainy day.

Where the Avon ring road (A4174) meets the M32 you can try to get a lift standing by the traffic lights next to the roundabout which is right before the slip road. (Which is better than M32 in center; but 7 km north of center.) (Ivy did this September 2018 and got a ride (all the way to Dover) in 15mins but maybe was particularly lucky).

It's possible to hitch on the 32/4 roundabout if your driver is not going in your direction – 8km from center, watch out for police who may move you.

There are now cameras on this junction and police will be with you in about 5 minuets from my experiance and the ring road on to 32 average wait of 3-4 hours.

Going north towards Birmingham/5
There is a bus(number 309 or 310) that goes from the bus station to a village called Almondsbury which is really close to the 5 and also far away from the Bristol suburbs. This is for those annoyed by hitching around suburb traffic. Alternatively walk north along Gloucester Road and in about 11km you will get there.

A third option is to take the 1, 2, 3, or 54 bus to Cribbs Causeway, get off just before the shopping centre itself. There's a roundabout by the Redwood Farm pub (formely the Lamb and Flag) with a lay by of sorts just after it (it's actually a junction for a tiny side road). It's not a great spot but it's a lot nearer than Almondsbury. There's also a petrol station a little further back towards Bristol which could be worth a try.

Last verified: in January 2018 Adam found a lift to Michaelwood services in 1 hour 30.

Going South towards Taunton and Exeter/5
Get to M5 junction 19 at PEAK BUSINESS TIMES by bus if you can. Or .....

The Clifton Suspension Bridge out of town narrows into a one lane road over a ravine , and drivers have to pay a toll to get on.
While you're not allowed to wait at the barrier , the time it took for the guy to get out of his booth and walk over to me to tell me this was all the time I needed to get a ride to Exeter (it looked like it wouldn't be too hard to wait either before or after the bridge, either). From the city centre, you can get a local bus (#8 and #9 both work) for £1.70 that'll take you to within about 200m of the bridge.

There's a big service station near Easton-in-Gordano at 5 Junction 19 . The good news is, hitching (in my experience) gets easier as you head South and West! Southbound from J19 Easton-in- Gordano services can be very slow at holiday traffic times - two hours or even six , especially in summer. Northbound hitching is also dificult .
There's an bus between Portishead-Bristol every 30 mins in the daytime £3.80 from J19 to Bristol centre .

Walking from J19 to Clifton is 7 kilometers.

Hitching into Bristol from J19 is now easier due to new traffic lights .

Another place to hitch FROM Bristol to 5 South is at the start of A369 - Clanage Rd - by U.W.E Bower Ashton Art Dept.
Paris is the capital of France. It is situated within a ring road called le périphérique, or le périph. The actual city is relatively small, but is surrounded by endless suburbs, some of which are linked to the urban public transportation system at no extra cost (i.e. a standard one-trip city ticket), while some others being labelled as outside zones and thus more expensive to reach.

Note that there is an "outer ring road" to the Paris suburb area, motorway A86 (or super-périphérique) and another wider ring even further called "la Francillienne" which isn't completed but still used to connect . If your ride is not going to Paris itself, you might want to clarify which ring they are going to take as it may affect the place where you'd want to be dropped. You may also find them useful if you need to bypass Paris, especially the Francilienne, as it has more gas stations and less complex interchanges.

Hitching in
During rush hours, it is possible (but illegal) to be quickly dropped on the ring road. This is useful if your ride is not willing to get out of it to drop you (which is often the case). Within the ring area, you are definitely linked to the whole regular fare subway system.

If you are coming from the Northeast and your ride is heading South (which is a normal truck route), chances are that your driver will not drop you on the ring road where it is complicated to stop. A frequent place to get dropped is the first exit South on the A6 called "Rungis". From there, you can reach the Metropolitan subway system by tram with one ticket, then use another one to your final destination. You can also reach other suburbs in the 94 department (Val de Marne) taking the TvM bus, which is also a normal Paris ticket.

Airports
There are 3 main airports that service Paris. Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Orly, and Beauvais. It is possible to hitch from the airports into the city, but to get from Paris to the airports, Blablacar is probably the most reliable option.
* CDG is in the North, and is the closest. A one-way ticket to/from the airport is 10.30 euros. To hitch into Paris from here, go to Terminal 3 and you will find a parking lot. Follow the signs to Paris and hitch at the parking lot exit.
* Orly is South of Paris. A one-way ticket to/from the airport is usually 12 euros, but there is a secret way that is only 3.80 (2x1.90 tickets)! From Paris take metro line 7 to the last stop (Villejuif-Louis Aragon) and then switch to Tram 7, which will take you right to the airport. Or do it backwards to get into Paris. Hitchhiking from Orly should be feasible, also from the parking lot.
* Beauvais is the furthest, and 45 minutes North from Paris. Tickets are an appalling 16.80 euros each way! Luckily, lots of Blablacar rides can take you there for 6 or 7 euros, and it is easy to hitchhike back (See the Beauvais page).

__TOC__

Hitching out
There are plenty of excellent spots for hitchhiking North (Aire La Courneuve), East (petrol stations and barrières de péage) and also South (Aire de Lisses). It's all about how much you are willing to pay in public transportation, and how daring you are.

North/Northeast towards England, Lille and Belgium 1
These are classified by cost in public transportation from Paris' centre. There is a bonus pro-tip at the bottom involving Arras :)

Option 1: Porte de la Chapelle
This option costs one local ticket. Porte de la Chapelle is where the A1 starts. Local drivers say they often see hitchhikers there. To get there, take the metro line 12 to Porte de la Chapelle, then walk to the roundabout. You can try getting a ride on the roundabout (there are traffic lights, which means that cars have to stop) or you can stand on the opposite side facing the roundabout where the motorway starts. Another good option is to start hitchhiking in the same street where the metro is. There are 2 petrol stations in that very street, just 50m deeper into the city. They aren't overcrowded and, at the same time, quite a few cars going up north stop here to refill; nonetheless, at such places, much depends on your luck, and according to some hitchhikers, this place won't make it to the top 10 best hitchhiking places in France. It is therefore recommended to hitchhike at the roundabout, where a quiet lane right by the traffic lights gives you a good opportunity to get onto the motorway (avoiding at the same time all the traffic that heads for Boulevard Peripherique).

A good option to leave faster is to show at the roundabout a sign for the airport "Charles de Gaulle". There is a petrol station (Aire La Courneuve - see Option 2) before the airport where the driver could let you out; don't miss it! The station is not so big and many drivers just go to the airport but at least you can ask people, whereas it could be hard and long at Porte de la Chapelle.

I tried this option but it didn't work well. Most drivers are local and you end up stuck in spots where everyone goes back to the center. Go further north is probably a best choice! Lola, October 2018.

Option 2: Motorway services Aire La Courneuve
This option costs one local ticket or zones 1–3 ticket (eur 2.75as of 2018). The petrol station Aire de Service de La Courneuve is about 2 km along the A1, north of Paris.

Take bus 150 from Porte de la Villette or bus 250 from Fort d'Aubervilliers (both are on metro line 7) to the stop Parc des Sports.
This bus stop is next to the A1 highway. Just walk to the right from the bus stop, without ever passing under the overpass. Then walk east parallel to the motorway through the parking lot of an apartment complex. There is a wall preventing access to the motorway, but if you continue walking a few hundred meters east and up a slight grassy hill, the wall ends. You can then follow a steep, thorny path full of nettles down towards the motorway and back west towards the petrol station. There is a fence right along the motorway, but near the petrol station it has been trampled down and you can step over it.

Attention: in the winter / early spring or after the rain walking down the hill to the motorway might be difficult because of mud. In February it took 2 hitchhikers almost 40 minutes to walk down and reach the fence, after numerous attempts to keep the balance and not to fall down. It might be a good idea in this case to hitch from the entrance of the highway, right at the cross before you turn to the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Attention 2: I tried this route September 2017 and although I got there following the instructions, the final fence closing of the petrol station has been fixed. I had to climb a tree to drop into the compound. I'm a clumsy person and I managed, but with a heavy backpack it might be challenging.

Attention 3: I used this option in April 2019 and it worked fine, following the original advice. There is a wall but go to the VERY end, up the slight grassy hill... The path goes down, the fence is trampled down, and then you're basically on the motorway for about 10metres before you're at the services.

From the petrol station, most drivers are only going to the airport or local communities. You should ask for a lift at least to the toll station (péage) heading north. This is a 20-minute drive down the motorway (some kilometers after the airport) and everyone has to stop here. It is a great place to get long-distance rides.

Option 3: Charles de Gaulle
Charles de Gaulle airport can be an option for hitching North-East, although waiting times might vary a lot.

It is easy to jump the metro at terminal 2 and there wasn't anyone guarding it. Maybe the same is true for terminals 1 and 3 but I can't vouch for it.

From terminal 2 walk out of terminal and head straight to the main road. You should see signs for A1 Paris Lille. Keep following these signs until the road splits for A1 Lille. One road goes to the left, under a bridge and there are some traffic lights. The other goes to the right. Stand to the right of the right turn. Cars can stop on a dashed out area to your left or drive a little past you on the right. A couple of cars stopped straightaway and I was easily able to get a lift to the next service station which had lots of people driving north to Lille, Belgium and Holland. That service station was very busy and it was easy to get a lift as well as a good meal from peoples' leftovers in the restaurant including half a bottle of wine!

Option 4: Motorway services Aire de Vémars Est
From 'Nation' bus station (also a metro stop), take bus 351* to 'Roissypole' located at Charles de Gaulle Airport (Terminal 3). It's the last stop and payment isn't required to enter the bus.You can BLACK RIDE on this bus both ways

From the coach station there (Gare routière), you can catch the 95.01 bus to Vémars, though this bus does not run on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Ask inside at the ticket office/information desk for which parking number the bus will be at (D2 in Oct 2013). The ticket costs €2. [BEWARE 95.01 does not work on public holidays and Sundays, so if that is the case, then get off at QUEBEC because the A1 highway (going to Lille) cuts through Paris multiple times and at this petrol station there is a higher chance of finding Dutch cars stopping and giving you a ride to another petrol station on the main highway, which is super busy and easy to find rides going to anywhere from Calais to Antwerp to Lille]

You can always try to go with the bus number 702 to Vémars centre from the airport (20 stops, 39 minutes). This will also work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (as of 2018)

From the Vémars bus stop walk straight 400m on 'Rue Pierre Curie' (D17) until it merges with 'Rue de la Mairie.' Walk an additional 350m until this merges with 'Rue des Vignolles' (D16).

On your left, the A1 will be clearly visible as will the 'Aire de Vémars Ouest' petrol station. From here, it is another 1.25km to any given entrance.

Another useful recommendation is this website, where you can virtually create any route you want to take out of the city. Coupled with Google Maps, it's an excellent tool:
http://www.ratp.fr/itineraires/en/ratp/recherche-avancee

For 351 Bus Route refer to link below
http://www.ratp.fr/informer/pdf/orienter/f_plan.php?loc=bus_banlieue/300&nompdf=351&fm=pdf

*Note: The 351 bus service does not run on weekends, but the above link can help find an alternate route.

Option 5: Senlis Péage
This option costs €9 (25% discount for under 26s) + a local ticket to Gare du Nord. The peage is 50km north of Paris, near the town of Senlis.

Senlis has no train station, but you still buy the ticket from a train station. From Paris Nord, go to Chantilly and switch to a bus to Senlis at the "gare routière" right outside of Chantilly's train station with your ticket. Once there, you need to walk a little and you'll find a "péage". The bus driver gave me the directions. This should take around one hour.

Option 6: Porte de Bagnolet (A3)
Google maps:
Get a ticket for the station Porte de Bagnolet. This is pretty close to where the A3 starts, which leads to the A1, so a lot of traffic is heading this direction. The place might not be ideal, but it worked for me after just 20 minutes to get a ride on to the A1, There is a bus stop, where buses often stop so the traffic is slowed down, furthermore, there is a small gas stop, where you can approach drivers directly which cue up there from time to time. Position yourself at the traffic lights before the bus stop to show your sign indicating the direction you want to go to.

Bonus Tip: Arras Service Station
Heading north on the A1, there is a fantastic Esso service station just outside Arras , with people heading pretty much everywhere. You can get rides to the UK (Chunnel), Lille, Belgium, Netherlands. Many difference license plates (GB, F, B, NL, D, E) and lots of opportunities.

East towards Metz, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Germany 4
Option 1: Motorway service station Aire de Ferrières
Quite long trip and a bit expensive. Takes you to a great petrol station (good for both day and night hitching); better if you speak French.

Take RER A to station Bussy St.Georges. You can also get to this RER A station by taking bus 4 or 44 from metro station Gutenberg. Make your way west to the D35 and then walk south along it for about 1km to a roundabout. You can try hitchhiking from here, but the service station is just a bit more than 2 km from here. You can walk on the grass field next to the motorway - don't choose this way in the morning or in autumn/winter as the grass is wet. The petrol station is called Aire de Ferrières and it's a "TOTAL" company.
Another option to reach this petrol station is to walk through the industrial zone of the Bussy district, which lies south of the railway, crossing the bridge over the motorway and then continuing on by walking on the grass until the actual petrol station (note that as of February 2011, there was a nice-sized fence to hop after crossing the bridge. Nothing too difficult, but a big backpack makes it harder!). Most of the walk will be on the road which means you will save some time while at the same time such a walk won't be so annoying if you happen to hitchhike in winter (then you apparently don't want to go through the fields).

Here's a map.

From Bussy-St. Georges there is a bus 46 to Jossigny, Bout Pecheret, from there its only 1.3 km to walk.

Option 2. Motorway junction slip-road
This one is close to Paris, faster and cheaper to get to, but still in the megapolis. Starting from there, you're likely to end up either at the petrol station described above or at the péage. Not good at night.

Take the RER Line A (Red) in the direction of Boissy St Legere until the station Nogent Sur Marne (€2.75 (2016)). Leave the station in direction of Rue Joinville and follow the sign to the A4. It is a 30 minute walk. There is a red light before the slip road (on-ramp). Lots of traffic, possibility to stop on the ramp for brave drivers.

Ask if your driver can take you at least to the next petrol station which is within the free motorway network. Toll gate is a bit further.

Option 3. From within the city limits: Quai de Bercy
Cheap, as you will only need a metro ticket and pretty fast too.

You can also try to hitch directly from within Paris rather than taking the train for at least half an hour and then walking.

Take the metro line 14 to Bercy and exit towards Boulevard de Bercy, take the Boulevard down to the bridge where it intersects with Quai de Bercy. Standing on Quai de Bercy it is advisable to have a sign indicating you want to get onto the A4. When cars stop, ask if they are going all the way to the toll station (péage), many drivers turn off the A4 before that but there are not really any convenient places to continue hitch-hiking from before the toll station.

Option 4. Lorraine TGV
French railway operator SNCF has been running low-cost TGVs under the brand OuiGO since a few years. The good news is that from the summer 2018 it runs from Gare de l'Est within city limits and at a reasonable time (12:55) instead of running at 6 am from the rail station at the CDG airport as it was the case before. If you book a bit in advance you can get a ticket to Lorraine TGV (in the outskirts of Metz ,
https://goo.gl/maps/GfXv9v4LGxn) or Strasbourg main station for as low as 10 €, although the fare you're more likely to find is around 15-20 €. The ride takes 1:15 hour. From Lorraine-TGV station it is relatively easy to hitch east towards Saarbrücken and further into Germany. In the beginning you will have a simple two-lane local road, which joins the motorway A4 near Forbach close to the german border.

Getting South or Southwest 6, 10, or 11
These spots are close enough to the city to be getting traffic in all southern directions.

Option 1: Porte d'Orléans
Once the most famous hitchhiking spot in France, this spot isn't bad nowadays, but it isn't great either. The good thing is that drivers aren't surprised to see people there, and that you don't need to get out of Paris in faraway suburbs.

Porte d'Orléans is the terminal subway station of line 4. There is an entry on the périphérique ring road where lots of people are later heading South. The best place is besides the "Novotel" building or (better) opposite it at the traffic lights. Be warned, traffic here is heavy and fast moving. If you have much baggage or more than one person I would not fancy your chances here. Waiting at the petrol station or even the adjacent war memorial will not give you the best traffic.
Edit : I think that the place in front of the hotel is pretty bad. Very hard for the cars to stop there. It's better to stand before, at the red lights. I stood near the gas station at the lights, you miss all the cars not coming from inside Paris, but it's way easier for the cars to see you and to stop.

Make sure to specify with a sign specifying that you go to Orléans or Chartres (if you are heading Southwest - A10 or A11), and that the driver will leave you at least at the "péage de Saint Arnoult" or before that at "Limours-Janvry" service station. Beware, just after the "péage", the motorway separates between A10 and A11. If you are heading directly South onto the A6, have a sign (you may try "Lyon" or Fontainebleau) and make sure to be left at Aire de Lisses, roughly 35 km further, a little bit after Evry (drivers to Evry are not enough for you).

Whenever a diplomat travels between Paris and the Orly airport, he'll go through here. Which means that there will be police presence. The police don't care about you, but it is very unlikely anyone will stop while they are around. That happens often enough. They stick around for one hour.

Option 2: Porte d'Italie
Similarly Porte d'Italie which is not far from Porte d'Orleans is a good place to hitch from. Additionally if you walk down the exit to the traffic lights, there is an overhead bypass which can keep you dry in the rain.

South towards Lyon, Marseille, Barcelona, Italy 6
Option 1: Motorway services Aire de Lisses
This option costs EUR 5.85 (but possible to have ride without ticket also), a zone 1–5 ticket and takes roughly 75 minutes. Aire de Lisses is the first service area on the A6, situated about 35 km South of Paris. It can save you time because you avoid all outbound traffic not really heading your direction, being located after all the motorway branch-offs.

Get the RER D towards Melun via Corbeil. Be careful to get on the right train as there are 2 routes for RER D towards Melun. As of 2010-02, the ID of the train you need was "ZIPE" or "ZOPO" (All trains on RER lines have a 4 letter ID depending on stations served). If it's too confusing (it's very confusing), get whatever train that goes to "Corbeil Essonne" and, from there, whatever train that goes to Melun. Get off at the station Villabé, the second after Corbeil-Essonnes. The station is not marked on Google Maps but don't worry, it's there: way from Villabé RER station to Aire de Lisses

Otherwise, you can take the RER D to Évry-Courcouronnes centre, and from there Bus 415 in direction of Villabé. Get off at stop "Ikea", the gas station will be a five minute walk away. Note that as of 2017, there is a fence you have to climb to get to the station.

[Note, Mar 2018: There is no barrier at Villabé and so you can pay the standard central Paris tarif to get into the metro network and then just ride out there.]

A problem with a petrol station is that leaving trucks can block the leaving cars, so cars won't have chance to stop at all. Artti stood there three hours without a sign until he walked to the ramp next to the petrol station. There is more traffic and therefore more chance to get ride. Also cars have lots of space to stop.

Option 2: Motorway services Aire de Nemours
You can take a train to Nemours Saint Pierre (transilien R from Gare de Lyon, a ticket costs about 10 euros) and walk 45min to the service area ( http://goo.gl/VUYmh0 ). Then you're already on a paying section (no local traffic), far out from Paris (80km), and can get a ride to Châlon, Mâcon or Lyon in a few minutes.

South-West to Orleans, Bordeaux, Spain 10 & West to Le Mans, Nantes, Rennes and all parts of Brittany 11
The A10 and A11 motorways follow the route of the A6 (see above) from Paris, and split from it near Antony/Rungis. Then, before the A10 and the A11 split up, there is the service station of Limours-Janvry near Briis-sous-Forges and a péage near St-Arnoult, 40 km Southwest of Paris. Whichever spot you choose, ask the driver to take you at least until the Limours-Janvry service station or the péage of St-Arnoult. From these places, you can find a driver who takes you on the A10 or the A11 depending on which way you want to go.

Option 1: Pont de Sevres
This option costs the price of an underground ticket. It takes you to the beginning of the N118 road which connects to the A10-A11 in about 25 km.

Take the subway 9 to Pont de Sevres, its end station. You start walking towards the bridge, where you can see the signs towards Nantes, Bordeaux, etc. The hitchhiking spot is just before the bridge, at the red lights. You can try with the cars coming from the direction of the metro station, and also with the cars which came along the river and are turning left to get to the bridge.

Option 2: Motorway junction Massy Palaiseau
This option costs EUR 4.90, a ticket for zones 1-4. This option is useful to get out of the ring roads and get directly on the A10 after all the branch-offs.

Take RER B to Massey-Palaiseau. Walk down Avenue Carnot along the Massy-Palaiseau railway towards the autoroute. After a while there you will see a long stretch of a road with lots of space for cars. Keep going and you will reach a roundabout. If you keep following this road, you will reach the motorway entrance underneath a bridge. Make sure to get a ride to the first barrière de péage (30+ km) at St-Arnoult or to the Limours-Janvry service station 5 km down the road.

Option 3: Motorway service station Limours-Janvry
The first service station on the motorway is called Limours-Janvry and it is situated 2kms northeast of the village Briis-sous-Forges. To get there you need to take RER B to Massy-Palaiseau. From there take bus 91.03 to Briis-sous-Forges. It runs about 3 times an hour on weekdays, once an hour on Saturdays, and there are no buses on Sundays. Then walk northeast along the small local road Route d'Invilliers. (It's not easy to find the road to the petrol station. no one in this village knows what street he is living in let alone that route you're looking for. They don't even know that there's a petrol station in the area. write the instructions and study the map!! I was lost in this village for couple of hours).
Briis-sous-Forges to the petrol station map

this one (good enough one, according to some hitchhikers). Really good according to others. Took two guys ten minutes to get a ride and a third guy about the same amount of time to a different place. Lots of trucks and cars passing by!

Option 4: Péage de Saint-Arnoult
You can take the RER C train to Dourdan. There are no controls on the exit, so if you are on the cheap, you need to pay only the basic metro ticket (some EUR 1.33) to get into the underground network in Paris. Once in Dourdan, cross the railroad track and turn left and then go straight on the D836 until you reach the péage after 4-5 kilometers. You should be able to hitch a car as there are many passing by and the French take easily on small routes if they see you walking. Get off just after the road crosses the autoroute, go left and in a short while, you will reach the péage. Look at the map beforehand! You have much higher chances here then anywhere else, there are lots of cars going through.

Option 5: Chartres: a spot to go directly on the A11, after it has split from the A10
Take the train from Paris-Montparnasse to Chartres (EUR 12) and start hitching from there. You might want to go to the service station Chartres-Gasville on the A11 east of Chartres (bus plus one hour walk!). From the train station, take one of many buses that stop at the Morard station. Here starts bus 12, take it and get off at N.Conté - some minutes before you arrive there, memorize the route: the bus crosses the motorway, and comes to a big roundabout where it turns right and continues to a second small roundabout to turn right again to arrive at N.Conté. Now comes 1 hour of walk: go back to the big roundabout and turn right (east) to follow the N10 until you come to a small city. There you encounter the next roundabout, where you turn left. Follow the street, it bends to the right and ends on the Rue du Bois Paris where you turn left (north). After 500 meters comes the motorway, continue until you have crossed it. The service station is 400 meters east, so try to pass through the trees on your right and follow the street to the service station.

West towards Rouen, Le Havre, Caen 13
Inside Paris
- Quai André Citroën, under the ring road overpass. A lot of traffic on Fridays and Saturdays as many inhabitants of the 15th and 7th arrondissements go to Normandy for the weekend. As a result, this spot is very effective on these days (20 to 30 min on average) but much worse at other times (expect to wait one and half hours).

- Porte d'Auteuil, at the last traffic light to the entrance of the A13, or even right under the "no pedestrians" sign on the shoulder to the motorway just after the light, where cars haven't picked up much speed yet and can see you well. Ask drivers to take you (at least) to Morainvilliers petrol station in Poissy.

In the suburbs
- Mantes-La-Jolie toll: take Transilien J suburban train from Saint-Lazare station. The fare is €8 but you may not be controlled. Get off in Mantes-La-Jolie (not Mantes Station). There's a 30 minute walk to the toll gate: check the map.

- Poissy rest area (a.k.a. aire de Morainvilliers): take Transilien J or RER A from Paris and get off at Poissy. Take bus 20 to bus stop "Auberge". There's one bus every hour on weekdays, fewer than that on Saturdays and it doesn't run on Sundays. See the timetable here.
