Bergen is the second largest city in [[Norway]] and the largest in Western Norway, with a population of 255,490 as of 1 October 2009. Bergen is the administrative centre of Hordaland county. Greater Bergen or Bergen Metropolitan Area as defined by Statistics Norway, which includes rural areas, has a population of 377,116 as of January 2010.

Except for a few periods of the year (notably in the early winter when it snows a lot), Bergen is very rainy and good waterproof gear is recommended, as things can get pretty soaked! Given the somewhat long waiting times that you'll have to face (even in good spots), finding a '''covered bus stop''' (''busslomme'' in Norwegian, different from ''bussholdeplass'' meaning simply bus stop) to hitch from and having a '''waterproof sign''' is vital!

As in whole of Norway, but especially on the West Coast, a smart thing to do before setting off for hitchhiking is checking the road conditions (especially in the spring when all the snow is melting down from the mountains onto the roads) and traffic by '''calling 177''' (active from 10 a.m. though). Especially if you're taking secondary roads, it's a good thing to check whether they're open and if there is any traffic at all.

=== From the City ===

The extensive network of tunnels make hitching out of the city close to impossible. The motorways almost completely go through the city, so it's quite hard to find an exit point. If you don't find it right inside the city, you'll have to walk a lot North, because of the long tunnels and the strange shape of the city.

You may try to get a ride from the city centre. Behind the central bus station there is the Goods Terminal of Schenker, a big freight company. You could also try your chance at traffic lights and hopefully succeed, but nobody reading or writing this ever has! There is a big junction close to the central lake (Byparken Smalungeren) [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bergen,+norway&sll=40.956468,-74.058688&sspn=1.088945,2.469177&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bergen+railway+station,+Hordaland,+Norway&ll=60.383963,5.336051&spn=0.008409,0.020771&t=h&z=16 where the E16, E39 and 555 meet], which is the main exit of Bergen, but the place is not pleasant to hitch from.

If you are willing to walk, or are somehow in the northern part, try Sandviksveien junction with Sjøgaten. It is about 1.5 km north from Central Bay (Vagen).
Another option would be the several entries from Breiviken village - this seems the most legal place to hitch, there isn't much traffic, and it's 3 km away from the bay, but more cars will turn on the main road and that place seems more friendly.

If you are South from the big bay (Store Lungegardsvannet), try the crossing of Fjosangerveien and Ibsensgate, where the traffic lights are. The problem is always that there are many directions from there (including the centre).

If you can get a lift to Nyborg, then you won. They have a huge roundabout. It is 12 km North from Bergen.

There are plenty of CouchSurfers in the northerly Sandviken suburb, so you might want to hitch from there in the morning. But unlike it may look like from the map, it's impossible to hitch a ride from the juncture between Sandviksveien and the many tunnels on Åsaneveien leading north. It's better to take a bus to '''Åsane Senter''' (a huge mall half an hour North of the city, which is very close to the juncture between the E39 (North) and the E16 (East), ''good dumpsters at ICA''). From Bryggen you can take bus number 50, 71, 80, 90, 270 and 285. Or you can use free IKEA bus going every hour from Busstasjon and Bryggen exactly there <small>''checked in March 2013''</small>. Close to the bus terminal there is a Statoil gas station where you can ask drivers, or just take a nice walk further to the next big roundabout, where you'll find two nice hh spots perfect both for hitching North and East. It's quite a walk, but considering the rain and the not excellent hitchability of Western Norway, reaching those two spots does pay off!

A good alternative for going '''East''' is taking a bus or train to [[Arna]] or [[Takvam]] and hitchhike just before the point where the E16 and and the RV7 meet. There is a bus station where cars can pull over easily since they slow down for the forthcoming roundabout. There is a good flow of traffic even in winter. But if that doesn't work you may still try the Tourist Info & fastfood place across the motorway. It's advisable to find rides at least to [[Voss]] where you can continue further.

Hitching south of Bergen implies hopping from island to fjord to island and involves lots of ferries, that are time consuming. You may start from the big roundabout in the city centre just south of the train station (''more info needed'').

== Hitching In ==

Hitching in is not a problem, since the city is not so big and nice to walk in. A good spot to be dropped off coming from Oslo is next to the Bus Terminal, which is behind the train station and very close to the Schenker truck terminal.

Within the municipality of Bergen there is a one price policy (e.g. NOK 29,- per adult single ticket for any distance within the municipality.) A night bus ticket costs NOK 50,-.

Once in Bergen it might become impossible to find a public toilet that you don't have to pay for. While you can find a good shelter from the rain in the bus terminal (not in the train station, it doesn't rain on the benches but it's open so cold in the winter months), if you need a toilet you might want to try one of the many university buildings scattered around the city (the faculty of psychology is on the main street close to the pond). Or just ask at a Restaurant, people are usually friendly and won't deny your emergency ;)

The '''Netherlands''' are a member state of the [[European Union]] as well as the [[Schengen Agreement]].
Hitchhiking in the Netherlands is quite easy, and legal in most places, though not on motorways. The basic idea is that when you're allowed to walk somewhere, you can stand there for hitching too.
Standing on a motorway entrance just in front of the motorway sign is allowed as well as standing on a petrol station along the motorway.
Asking the dutch people at a service station is faster than waiting while using the thumb for hitchhiking.

Since 1991 Dutch students have a card providing them with free public transport (either on weekends or during the week), so hitchhiking is not as popular as it used to be. In some university towns there are still official [[liftershalte]]s, '''official hitchhiking spots'''.

Other good places are petrol stations along the motorways and the entrances to the motorway from larger cities (when there is a stopping space such as an emergency lane). On such a place the average waiting time is 5–45 minutes (same as Germany). A major difference with [[Germany]] is that many lifts are not longer than 50 km. At petrol stations you can try to talk to people, which will probably work out fine if you don't dress up like a hippie. Try to speak in Dutch or English. French and German often work too, but not as effectively.
Most likely the dutch people will avoid you while speaking in German.

* Use of Internet PCs in every city library, for a small price, Also you can find lots of public wi-fi networks that you can connect your laptop with for using the internet.
* When hitching in the Netherlands for a longer period (or when you're living there), it's advisable to buy yourself a ''15-strippenkaart'' for EUR 7,60, or a ''45-strippenkaart'' for EUR 22,50 in advance in a shop. This is a lot cheaper than buying a 2-, 3- or 8-strippenkaart on the bus or tram. (In the Netherlands any tram/bus route is divided into zones/stripes ‒ for example, if you go from the centre of [[The Hague]] to the beach in [[Scheveningen]], it costs you 3 stripes, [[Delft]] to [[The Hague]] is about 8 stripes. So even if you are hitching all around the Netherlands, you can get yourself a strippenkaart (valid for around one year) for getting into/out of city centres ‒ it will be valid all over the country.)
* The banks here often do free coffee and sometimes even cookies.
* 'Lefier' (or local job-centres) do free coffee and sometimes have jars of free chocolates and mints.
* Also make sure to check out some bigger supermarkets like Jumbo, Albert Heijn, Super de Boer. Those are the places to get free coffee and tea from the coffee machine located somewhere in the store!
* Employees in the very common BP gasstations (and a few random other ones) tend to tell you not to hitch in front of the station, where the pumps are. Finding a ride at the parking lot, or thumbing where the back of the station starts is typically not a problem. It's best not to frustrate the staff, as the more often conflicts occur, the more likely they are to have an aggresive policy towards hitch hikers.



== License plates ==
In the Netherlands, license plates do not contain any marking about where the car comes from, but it does indicate the age of the car (although not in a straightforward way). Often though, the name and the city of the garage where the car was bought is indicated just under the license plate on the backside of the car. On busy petrol stations this may be useful information to look out for, as it may indicate where people are driving to. A normal license plate has three blocks of black letters or numbers on a yellow background. Every block consists of two letters or two numbers (so in total six letters and numbers). Since 2007 a new series of license plates is in use for the newest vehicles existing of a combination of three letters in the middle. Taxis' license plates have a blue background. The license plate of old timers is very dark blue with white letters. The number of cars with such license plate or yet another kind is very limited.

The Netherlands are one of the rare countries where you can find a cheap pot of 'Peanut Butter' (''pindakaas''), which is a nutritious item that you can easily carry in your backpack. Also, you can find a tube of 'mayonnaise' and 'ketchup' sauce (''Zaanse saus'') for about 30 cents, which last long without needing to be refrigerated and are great supplements to sandwiches or ''friet'' (as it avoids having to pay the 50 cents sauce at the ''snackbar'' (or sometimes ''frituur'' or ''frietkot'', especially in Belgium) when ordering a snack).

From the main exit ('''South East''') of The Central trainstation head right (South West) on Schipholweg. Turn right onto Plesmanlaan after about 250 meters. This is the big tunnel, not the small one. Follow plesmanlaan for 1.5 km or so when a Shell station will appear on your right. Note that there is not a sidewalk the whole way, but you are allowed to walk until the petrol station, no problem.

From here, you're best off asking people if they pass by the what is commonly as the "bridge restaurant" on the A44, unless they go straight to your destination of course. This Service station with a bridge and a few restaurants is a great place from which to hitch on to the airport or Amsterdam.

Do not bother with the BP station on the left early on Plesmanlaan, as they are likely to send you away, depending on who is working that day.
