Although the 900 bus runs all the way to Edinburgh, they do stop at the Harthill Service Station on the M8 - you can hitch from there in both directions.
Alternatively, from the city center is not too hard to find a traffic light stopping cars just before they get on the M8. Showing a sign to cars stopped by the red light should work.

** Beware : Within Glasgow to reach to any point for hitch hiking you could spend upto 2.4 Pounds atleast or more if you are switching between trains and buses. Therefore check out megabus uk which provides bus service 900 at 5.6 pounds between Glasgow and Edinburgh and sometimes even at prices lower than this. You need to book the bus on line and the same price ticket is not available at the Buchanan bus station. Any other recommendation of a petrol station is equally expensive and not worth it. The highway M8 does run through the city of Glasgow and if one follows the way out of the Buchanan Bus Station , and then left on red light, past the university there one can see the road converging into the highway and could have been a good spot for hitch hiking but needs to be tried and tested.
