: Yes, because the service area at IJsseloordweg has been reopened in october 2006, like I wrote in the replaced text. The rest of Tom's contribution seemed irrelevant and undesirable; relating the impression that Arnhem has a high share of 60+ drivers with WWII, that there are gangs with saloon cars and adding the caption "hh out of arnhem - one hitch too far is really undesirable and certainly not true. It seamed a way to express frustration, but that's not the right place here ~ then use a boxing ball instead ;). Also, the advice to change an itinerary to Nijmegen when stuck in Arnhem and heading for Germany (eg on the spot that does not exist anymore according to Tom) is not that good. Especially now that the service station under reconstruction on IJsseloordweg is back in service. Besides that it would not be easier or less hard over Nijmegen (or I do not know how to claim that ~ I'm interested to hear why it would be easier over Nijmegen, which isn't the case I claim). Because between the now returned service area and the German border there are still 2 service areas, so only a short ride out of Arnhem makes the world go round, if you have a driver going only to Doetinchem or Zevenaar, you already get by service area Oudbroeken (A12 between exits 28 and 29). And if the service area on IJsseloordweg would be taken out of service, it would still be doable to get a ride there from junction Velperbroek, the roundabout which connects A12, A348 and IJsseloordweg, or at the Esso petrol station in the south of Velp, 100 meter before Velperbroek roundabout! :) Well, it would have been better to discuss the matter and not change, or do this prior to changing the page. I'll copy these comments to the Arnhem page as well! Document about the reconstruction of the service area including a photo: http://www.texaco.nl/pdf/Arnhem%20NL.pdf. I've hitchhiked there on 27 december 2006 fverhart 23:59, 13 July 2007 (CEST)

: I highly recommend to remove all the emotion based things which Tom notes from the second paragraph of the current page for Arnhem, because these notions are not objective and factually incorrect. I've often hh-ed out of Arnhem with good results. Please note, that I do not contribute new matter to this wiki now, I'm only looking for mistakes to improve the current texts. The best thing to do for the Arnhem page would be to introduce an overview of good hitchhiking spots, which may be found at www.franknature.nl/hitchhike/hitchhike.htm and www.autostopguide.com. There haven't been major changes in the infrastructure around Arnhem over the past 10 years and the spots in the Autostopguide are still completely or almost up to date.fverhart 23:59, 13 July 2007 (CEST)

:: Excellent news about the IJsseloordweg! It's heartening to see a picture of that rebuilt service station, especially with the 24 UUR OPEN sign in front :). I put a liftershalte marker up a couple of weeks ago about that spot, but it seems like a good idea for me to change its details now. About my text::: - it was submitted "as of summer 2006".:: - I made sure it complied with the Hitchhiker's POV page.:: - I didn't give advice to change an itinerary to Nijmegen - I said that if the option to Nijmegen comes along, it may be worth taking this option. Whether it's better or not, I don't know, I hadn't compared them yet and I didn't know of anyone who'd thoroughly tested it from both cities.:: - regarding "a hitch too far" - I don't see anything wrong with adding something which managed to make my sister smile :).:: - an unusually high proportion of people over 60 and of boy-racers in souped-up Micras (both renowned for not giving lifts) is exactly what I saw, so that's what I'm going to say. Although I'm not pretending that this is a Arnhem-only thing and I should have made that clearer in my text (especially the comment on Arnhem's older demographic - apparently despite a rise in the 55-65 year group, the number of 65+ers is dropping and Arnhem isn't getting greyer just yet - almost certainly has nothing to do with WWII).

So is the Texaco hitchhiking spot back then? That's a relief :) --Tom 15:59, 13 July 2007 (CEST)
:If I write the service area is open, it is simply open. Grts --fverhart 23:59, 13 July 2007 (CEST)
Hoi Frank! Did you remove text from Arnhem by accident or was there are reason to do so? In the former case, don't worry, I merged both versions. In the latter case: it's good to leave a Summary of the edit in case it might cause confusion among other Hitchwiki folks. :: On another note, the information you've put here about leaving Arnhem is great, and would be great if it were added to the Arnhem page itself. It's very possible to use what I've written alongside more conventional advice - just add your advice, and if it differs greatly from the previous advice then adding the words "Second opinion", "Third opinion" etc or similar works great.
:: I'm all for HPOV and personal stories, I feel they should be encouraged on this wiki - if we stick to writing simple, straightforward guides, then we will end up with a simple, straightforward guide - it'll be a wonderful source of information, and the wiki element of it is something to be admired, but the end product would be very similar to other hitchhiking guides which we already have. I'll continue on the Hitchhiker's POV talk page.
:: I'll edit Arnhem now with what I think looks good, with the information that we have so far. As always, feel free to chop and change! --Tom 02:54, 14 July 2007 (CEST)
::: Cool Tom, now it's better and I feel tempted to add my own personal experiences with hh out of Arnhem :). --Fverhart 10:30, 14 July 2007 (CEST)
