Phillip Island is an Island close to Melbourne, Australia. It's a popular weekend destination for Melbournians and has a few sights and beaches, which makes it popular with backpackers and Asian tourist groups.

Hitching around

There is virtually no public transport on the island, which means everyone has a car and everyone knows that hitching and walking are the only ways to travel without one.

Locals are friendly, relaxed and likely to go out of their way to drop you wherever you are heading to. The island is not big, so it's never more than a few minutes of detour for them. It's pretty easy to reach any point on the island by hitching within an hour, as long as there is some traffic. Try to stick to main roads and avoid hitching after midnight.
