Chita (Russian: Чита) is the administrative center of Zabaykalsky Krai in Eastern Siberia, Russia.

  • Population — 333,159 (2024); it is the twelfth largest city in Siberia and the fifty-sixth largest in Russia.
  • Located in a basin at the foot of hills, on the banks of the Chita River where it flows into the Ingoda River. The climate is sharply continental.
  • Major industries — energy and food production.
  • Transport hub on the Trans-Siberian railway and the federal highways R258 "Baikal", R297 "Amur", and branch A350 Chita — Zabaykalsk; international airport.
  • The historical center preserves the rectangular grid of streets according to the 1862 plan. Among the pre-revolutionary monuments: the "Church of the Decembrists" of the late 18th century, numerous stone and wooden houses of merchant-gold miners from the early 20th century.

Southwest towards Ulan-Ude and Irkutsk via R258 "Baikal"

Option 1 - TUSM-4 Stop

Take bus No. 10 from the railway station to the stop "TUSM-4". This is at the edge of the city. You'll need to hitch a local ride from here to reach the bypass junction.

Option 2 - Lesnoy Gorodok

Buses 109, 109A, 126 to "Lesnoy Gorodok" – this is already at the end of the bypass.

Option 3 - Zykovo

Buses No. 1 and 19z to the settlement "Zykovo" take you to the bypass road, on its western half.

East towards Chernyshevsk and Blagoveshchensk via R297 "Amur"

Option 1 - Smolenskoye Ring

City buses 30, 102, and 120 go to "Smolenskoye Ring" on the bypass.

Option 2 - Ugdansky Ring

At the end of Kamyshinsky district is "Ugdansky Ring" on the bypass. From the railway station you can get here by buses 8, 20, 105, 106, 115.

South towards Zabaikalsk via A350

Option 1 - Peschanka

Bus No. 9 to its final stop "Peschanka". Walk further along the highway to the junction with the bypass.

Option 2 - Atamanovka

Exit post is near Atamanovka village. There is no official stop at the checkpoint, but a bit earlier is the "Sady Gorny" stop. Buses 103, 235, 236, 511, 526, 553 go there. You can also reach Atamanovka by suburban train from Chita-1 to Karymskaya, but only twice a day. It's 1.5 km from the station to the highway. You'll need to return north 2.5 km by any bus to the checkpoint.

Transit

The highway to Vladivostok bypasses the city to the north.
