South towards Melbourne

There are two options.

  • The Princes Highway is more scenic and mostly not a freeway, but it's 200 km longer. You can try to take a train to Waterfall and walk to the highway. It might not be legal to stand there, though, and it's not a great spot. Guaka and amylin waited 10 minutes, declined a ride to the next town and then waited an hour or so. So possibly find yourself a better spot to start.
  • Take the Hume Highway if you're in a hurry (which you shouldn't be). It takes 10 hours to get to Melbourne if you are lucky enough to get a truck going all the way. It's less easy to get out than on the Princes Highway. Joy caught the train to Casula and hitched from the service station 10 min walk away (waited 10 mins). Check out multimap.com.au to see where to go, or just ask someone.
  • Alternatively, catch a train to the end of the Campbelltown line (or might be called Macarthur line) to Campbelltown Station, exit the station to where the buses stop, and catch a bus to the university of West Sydney (the bus stop is located at the end to the right). Ask the bus driver if they can drop you near the highway, and sometimes if they are nice, they do. From there follow the road (away from the university) and follow the exit left to the (hume) highway. Go allow the highway for a few hundred metres (so as to go past the joining lane) and you will be in a nice spot for cars to stop.

Ive used this stop many times, and so have many of my friends.

North towards Byron Bay

•Catch a Bus to Hornsby, head towards the Pacific Highway the traffics slows in the area in the morning.

• Catch a train to Newcastle ($15 one way) and another to Hexum. Cross the foot Bridge and Highway. The traffic is fast moving but there is room for people to pull off. Peacehead got a ride from a Truckie all the way to Byron from here. trash:Sydney
