Hitchhiking out

West towards Agra and New Delhi by Agra-Lucknow Expy

In front of the main train station, on the southern lane of the Station Road look for a bus 02 that goes towards Dubagga Bus Station (20 INR, Mar 2023). The bus should be going westward from the train station. Get of at Buddeswar Chauraha. From there walk southwest into Mohan Road and take a green auto rickshaw to Fatehganj (10 INR, Mar 2023). Get off when you spot an overpass which is the beginning of the expressway.

East towards Patna and Varanasi by Purvanchal Expy

In front of the main train station, on the northern lane of the Station Road look for a bus 02 that goes towards Ganga Ganj (20 INR, Mar 2023). The bus should be going eastward from the train station. Get of at Chand Saray Mod, where the Purvanchal Expressway begins. If you go to Varanasi get first to Azamgarh and then hitch south along the National Highway 28, which is being upgraded to a dual carriageway, so it's relatively fast.

Public transport

The city of Lucknow has quite a few bus lines with modern buses with AC onboard. There are also older buses without the AC. They all have numbers, some display directions at the front, back and the side of the bus both in Hindi and English and stop at designated stops, however most stops don't have any physical signs. Google Maps shows some of the bus lines but not all and many bus stops are missing. There's an Indian app called Chalo which shows the stops somewhat more accurately, but some bus lines are still missing. If your Google Play Store is not registered in India this app won't be available there, but you can download it from Uptodown.
