Hitchhiking out

Northwest towards Taichung or Taipei

Take the MRT to Martial Arts Stadium station. After exiting the MRT station, you will see a highway high up and cross on main road after you go out MRT station, walk toward to highway along Zhongzheng 1st Rd to the other side of the highway where has a big green road sign indicates North, and Chengcing lake. You will see the road separate in two roads into a main road and interchange by a long triangle shape space with a white line on the ground, stand on the triangle space and thumb up to the drivers who are heading to the interchange.

South or East towards Taitung or Pingtung

Take the MRT to Martial Arts Stadium station and leave the station from Exit No.3. After exiting the MRT station, you will see a highway high up. Cross the main road and walk towards the nearest interchange next to the stadium. The road will separate into two roads, a main road, and an interchange, and there will be a long triangular-shaped space with a white line on the ground. That triangular space is the spot where you can hitchhike by thumbing up to the drivers heading to the interchange. If you don't speak Chinese, it's better to have a sign indicating the place you are going to.

If you are heading to Taitung, it's a good idea to have two signs: one for Taitung (臺東) and one for Kenting (墾丁). This way, people going to Kenting (which is where most people heading south from Kaohsiung are going) will be more likely to pick you up. You can then get off at Fenggang (楓港) and hitchhike from there to Taitung (for more information on the Fengang hitchhiking spot, see the Taitung page and the 'Hitching in' section).
