Hitchhiking is an unknown concept in Indonesia, and it might be hard in some parts.

Hitching in Java, Sumatra, Bali and Borneo is very easy. In Java you hardly wait ten minutes for your next truck. Traffic is very slow though, if you want to cross the country dont make the mistake to take a 1 month visa. Hitching on ferries is possible, you may get a seat (you may be hidden though) in a truck. Surabaya is the place to go from Java to Borneo.

Cities

Sleeping Jalan Jaksa is the tourist road with the cheap hostels (about 3 USD. Pretty much in the center. Ask taxi drivers how to get there and take a bus.
