Hitchhiking is an unknown concept in Indonesia, and it might be hard in some parts.

Hitching in Java, Sumatra, Bali and Borneo is very easy. In Java you hardly wait ten minutes for your next truck. Traffic is very slow though, if you want to cross the country dont make the mistake to take a 1 month visa. Took me 3 complete days and nights from jakarta to bali! Hitching on ferries is possible, you may get a seat (you may be hidden though) in a truck. Surabaya is the place to go from Java to Borneo.

The ferries suck though. As much as i know: trucks are allowed to take 2 (or 3?) people free in the ferries. you may be one of them, or an additional one. in this case you ve to hide until you are in the ferrie, later on no one wants to see the ticket. biggest harbours in java are jakarta (tanjung priok), surabaja (to borneo 20h, and more). the ferry java bali is half a dollar and one hour...hardly worth waiting for a ride. hitching in bali is fine too. Cities

Sleeping Jalan Jaksa is the tourist road with the cheap hostels (about 3 USD. Pretty much in the center. Ask taxi drivers how to get there and take a bus. Worldhitch 18:08, 7 October 2007 (CEST)
