General Aspect

- Hej! I thought the main page should just be an overview with the countries and without cities. Did I get it wrong? - deleea

Hi! :) Well, it might be good to have some cities in there as well. To give an idea to people and to persuade people to add something about cities we don't have yet! - Hello. Before discovering this place for discussion I already filled some boxes eg about Virgin hh, Poland and the Netherlands. On one hand this wiki is a good idea, because it has some (very small) potential to become an interesting source of information. However, I am not expecting this at all. Which does not need to mean anything. Any new business usually takes some time - up to three or five years - to make a little bit more than it costs, and so it might be with this initiative. As for what I've read it's some kind of start. However, I have doubts about the general neutrality of the content for now. For example - I read that a country can be skipped if an attempt to hitchhike there does not succeed. What a bullshit! This may be reasonable for random long distance travellers, however many people who hitchhike do so for very different reasons. For example because they don't have money, because there is no public transport and so on. Hitchhiking in the Netherlands "is possible". "It's possible" for some, for others it is easy, not just possible. So, my comment is a very positive one - I hope - which tries to say. What is the neutral point of view? Ah, I see that the hitchhikers point of view is wanted. If so, what is a hitchhiker, and what is the hitchhikers point of view? If a non-hitchhiker wanted to hitchhike out of town, what would be his or her point of view? That's all. It's an ambitious project you're thinking of. All the best with it. Regards Frank Verhart. Hi! Just finished HGttG today :) So I just wanted to write Don't panic! but then I saw you don't like it.

- Hey Hitchhikers! Just joined the new hitchhiking wiki here-- whew! there have been a few moves in these last 2 years, hope we are all able to make this a permanent stay here on hitchwiki.org. I contributed to hitchhikingguide.org and hitchhiking.wikia.com but do not feel the need to mark which contributions belong to me within this new wiki. As you will see from my user page, I am creator/webmaster/co-editor of digihitch.com. Some of the information I personally collected for digihitch I will also share here, and as with all hitchhikers I have a ton of info that has not yet been written. As I hitchhike primarily in the USA, I will have most to contribute to that section. (Don't believe the misinformation found on the web... there are still tens of thousands of hitchhikers in the USA). I -and the digihitch community- would really appreciate it if you cite digihitch.com for all information you collect from there. The website is community-run and has been the hard work of many world hitchhikers for over 5 years. Support our community when possible and all hitchhikers will benefit! I must admit that I was opposed to a hitchhiking wiki when Teppo first suggested it to me in April 2005. We at digihitch.com had just launched our digihitch World section and I believed that all information would be best shared there among registered members (without all the spam maintenance required of a wiki), but since that time I understand the value of a wiki such as this and will attempt to share unbiased contributions where possible. Writing style

I was feeling that it would be more interesting and correct to split the 'factual information' of the 'personnal experience', be that the factual information about a hitching spot comes first while the personnal ones would come in a different paragraph which follows. It would give a more professionnal look to the cities or country pages instead of having to read the subjective point of view of one person everytime, which is interesting, but the factual reading is usually providing a straight to the point information that is often quickly needed. Having a little code about how to make it would enhance the whole project. Because is it of any interest to know that someone met someone else when he was in town or that it was rainy ... Also, I would like to add. It would be great if the information given is most of the time somehow verified instead of being disclaimed. As on many pages, the statement: Free use of Internet in every Library might not be accurate and is quite expressed in a 'powerful' way that does not leave much contrary Maplefanta 01:48, 5 December 2007 (CET)

Hey, I agree with you. I just sometimes managed personal experience by setting it cursive, and behind some factual information. Writing verified instead of being disclaimed is a good point, but sometimes a bit hard for me as a not native English speaker :) But we can try to set this up as a standard. Overview

- For me, it always takes to long to find a specific country on the mainpage (especially in europe), because countries, continent-parts and cities are mixed. I would suggest removing at least the cities and maybe also the continent-parts (I think it's more likely that people are looking for a specific country). I reformatted it a little bit, now it even looks good on my little screen (1024x768) :) I noticed the <big>-tags there, but for some reason, they don't work here (Opera on Linux). I changed it to bold instead --MrTweek 01:03, 5 December 2006 (CET)

Errors that need to be fixed

Anyway, Kyiv/Kiev on the title page I just added some tips to the Kyiv page (well, one tip :) - please note in Ukrainian language Kiev is written as Kyiv - which should be the correct name to use (Kiev is the old Russian name for the city). Mind you, noone will get confused, but just for the sake of completeness (and to not piss off any Ukrainians :) Cheers Paul (djdirect from CS) PS: what's wrong with HHGTG? :)

When you log in you can "move" pages to another title. That way there will also be a redirect. Now both Kyiv and Kiev point to the same article.
Something wrong with HHGTG? Nah. Or do you mean Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking. Well, I think the title is a bit long. But maybe it's good. I'd be willing to use any name, if there are enough folks who want that name. :) Guaka 20:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Members listing

Reorganization

- I tried organize the photos and whatnot to look a little better, but I can't really make it look good. Someone with an aesthetic eye needs to handle it. Maybe it's just because of my resolution (1024) but the pictures block out all text in the left column making it all drop down below the picture. This leaves a huge whitespace gap to the left of the pictures and doesn't look very nice. Another thing I noticed is that even though the columns are all 33%, the left column is smaller than the middle column because of margins. If we could even that up it might fix the above problem with the pictures.

I bolded the text of Canada, Mexico, US and Greenland to make N America a little easier to navigate. By the way, Europe lookes very nice now. Zactalk 04:45, 13 December 2006 (CET)

Central Europe

Index 17:06, 29 July 2007 (CEST) There should be also and Central Europe, just w N and E it is not enough, adding central E itcan help with the navigation on the map. Who usually does that? (I am a new here, so excuse for eventually inapropriate Q:) )

That's a good idea. We are self-organizing: anybody is welcome to do (almost) anything here! So feel free to try out editing Template:Mainpage-locations. You could also copy that into e.g. User:Index/locations test if you don't feel ready yet to change the Main Page, and then copy it to the real template when it's all good. :) Guaka 22:32, 29 July 2007 (CEST)

Email list

08 May - There is now a hitchwiki email list, for any discussions related to Hitchwiki, feel free to join. Why don't you just use the yahoogroups hh list? Do you expect so much to discuss? I guess the one or the other email there over doesn't annoy people, but might bring the one or other on the wiki.. --Alex 19:24, 11 May 2007 (CEST)

Mapping

It would be useful to map some of the hitching departing point, on my case to complete and easy the comprehension on the information about Canada. I know it has been done by some in a couple of pages... would anyone help out with that? (Basically its because it's not something I know how-to) Maplefanta 19:43, 13 September 2007 (CEST)

There is an article about How to add maps to articles. If you still have problems, just ask, I'm happy to help you. It would be kinda difficult for me to add these maps to articles for areas where I've never been, nor do I know anything about Canadian geography :( Hope you can work it out, or someone who has been there can help. Layout

I just changed the layout a little, but still I am not really satisfied with it. I think that it's not so obvious what hitchwiki is, when you see it the first time. There are like 100.000 links, list of words, countries, names, etc, but not much text. I think we need a short and clear description on the main page, so that first time visitors can see at once, that they find any information they want here (Because I'm sure they can :)) And maybe we should put the images more on top, to make the page more colorful, more inviting --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 14:27, 10 October 2007 (CEST)

Yep, good idea. I'm asking myself if the list of hitchhikers is that useful? Maybe we should have the General Info about First time, etc. there, but remove some stuff you'll find yourself if you're going deeper into the hitchhiking stuff (like Boats, Planes, Trains)... So for that the news can be more visible (to see that there's activity...) etc. Also the list of countries is a bit annoying, we can add some more new countries (thanks to User:worldhitch ;) ) like Brunei etc. For that the list is getting bigger and bigger, and someday it will be impossible to list all 192+ states of the world there :) Maybe we can track the list more down. What about the pictures. hm... no idea, but currently it's not the best solution. About the new header, it's using 1/3 of my screen, it's definitely too big! :) (Remember, not everyone has a 17" Wide-screen Monitor). And, can someone delete the list Based on work by at the main page? It's blowing up my screen. Tables

The different tables are popping in on the pages and that is great, it enhance and summarise the information. Though, I would like to create some, I don't know how... and I would like to sometimes edit them when they are already done, but they are impossible to find.
