Fort Augustus is a city in Scotland.

Hitchhiking out

It was very hard for user SebDCR to hitch out of Fort Augustus due to the low concentration of traffic at all times. Hikers need to be aware that there are very few buses leaving the Fort in case they get stranded there. Your best bet to hitchhike out is to approach the car park just to the right of the Londis store that's next to the Fort Augustus petrol station and ask around the tour buses that go there every day. Bus operators might need a bit of convincing, but it's the quickest way to get out. SebDCR managed to get a ride on one and did a whole tour for free before being dropped off at Edinburgh! Also, a lot of visitors go eat at the Monster Fish & Chips Co. chipper that's next to the Londis. The employees are really nice and will help you get help from customers, and you will probably get a ride out through talking to them whilst enjoying some really good chips.

South towards Fort William, Edinburgh, Glasgow

To hitch out towards the cities, head south on the A82 motorway (to your right if you're standing facing Loch Ness), and stand in the corner of A82 and Glendoe Rd. I reccommend you stand here because, if you go further south down the A82, there are no viable spots where a car can stop to pick you up.

North towards Drumnadrochit, Inverness

The petrol station next to the Londis is a good bet. If not, there is a wee shoulder right in front of Monster Fish and Chips where people can stop to pick you up. A sign is always useful.

Other useful info

If you do not fancy camping in the woods and you're stuck in Fort Augustus, make use of your people skills. Many owners of bars and hotels around Loch Ness are quite keen to give you a bed if you offer to do some service for them in exchange, like playing music or entertaining guests at a local pub.
